Don’t be lulled into complacency by the relative peace here on the periphery in Mendoland; in the heart of America’s centers of government and corporate power there is a coup going on against the Constitution of the United States and the democratic institutions that it established.
Right now the coup plotters – Donald Trump, the Republican Party, and their billionaire oligarch overlords – are going all out to subvert the election process so that Democrats can never again hold the reins of power.
The method the coup plotters are using to gain permanent control of the U.S. House of Representatives is the tried and true technique of gerrymandering. Gerrymandering is the practice of drawing congressional district lines in a state so that the party in power wins a majority of congressional seats even though they don’t necessarily represent a majority of the state’s voters. Take the state of Texas for example: party registration is 46.5 percent Democrat, 37.8 percent Republican and 15.7 percent unaffiliated, yet the Texas Congressional delegation is 66 percent Republican and 34 percent Democrat. Gerrymandering is the only way the Republicans can maintain control of the House.
With the current gerrymandered districts in several Republican controlled states, the Republicans now hold a narrow 5 seat majority in the House. This is too close for comfort for the coup plotters, so under Trump’s direction, the Republican Texas state legislature and governor, in a highly controversial mid-decade redistricting, redrew its congressional district lines in a way such that Republicans will pick up another 5 congressional seats in 2026 on top of their already gerrymandered majority.
Republican gerrymandering has so distorted the democratic concept of one person, one vote, that the democratic institution of the U.S. House of Representatives no longer represents the majority of the American people.
In America, each state controls its own election process, and the U.S. Supreme Court has given its blessing to gerrymandering (except when it is based on race), so the only option left for Democrats to counteract Republican gerrymandering is to gerrymander Democratic controlled states. This is what our “democracy” has come to.
Proposition 50 on the California ballot this November 4, is a Democratic sponsored effort to gerrymander California’s congressional district lines to create 5 additional Democratic congressional seats to offset the Republican gerrymander in Texas. For Californians, this is a choice between forever conceding power to House Republicans, or to sacrifice democracy in order to save it. I doubt this is what the framers had in mind when they wrote the Constitution in 1789, but the Republicans in 2025 have left the rest of us with no other choice than to vote yes on Prop 50.
The coup plotters know how important it is to defeat California’s Prop 50 for their coup to succeed, and they are using their unlimited funds to bankroll a right-wing propaganda campaign decrying Prop 50 as undemocratic gerrymandering – never mind their own disingenuous scheme to gerrymander Texas. Don’t be fooled by this Republican deceit, vote yes on Prop 50.
