Staying in hotels offers many perks–housekeeping, room service, easy access to restaurants and bars, concierge and so much more. While other options like Airbnb and Vrbo accommodations have become popular options to use, the classic hotel will always be a solid and dependable option. There can be small downsides, however. Have you ever checked into your hotel after a long day of traveling, head up to your room, and realize that you are incredibly thirsty? Most people head down to the lobby, buy overpriced water bottles at the hotel market and call it a day.

It’s definitely an option to refill your water bottle with the tap water in the sink (I am constantly googling whether the city I’m in has safe tap water or not.) However, many people prefer ice cold water, and tap water just doesn’t quite hit the same. On the other side of the spectrum, if the city you’re in doesn’t have safe tap water, or you’re traveling internationally and know that it would be safer to drink bottled or filtered water, you might feel like buying bottles at the hotel desk is your only option.
I’ve stayed in my fair share of hotels, so much so that one year of my life I spent entirely in hotels across the United States and Japan (thanks to a Broadway tour I was performing in.) Eventually, I got really sick of having to buy bottled water from the hotels, and needed to find a solution.
You Can Get Free Water In Most Hotel Gyms
In a travel hack article by Brent and Michael Are Going Paces on Substack, they share an incredibly sneaky hotel water hack. They acknowledge that often a hotel will provide one bottle of water in the room at check-in, however that’s not nearly enough to stay properly hydrated. Plus, if you’re in a foreign country with tap water that may upset your stomach, you’re going to want filtered water for things like brushing your teeth, as well.
Brent and Michael said, “ The solution? The hotel’s gym or fitness center will almost certainly have more drinking water—either in a large cooler or in bottles, often even refrigerated. Either way, it’s there for the guests’ use, even if you don’t actually workout.”
Photo by Aalo Lens on UnsplashI’ve done this myself many times, and the key is to confidently walk into the gym and grab what you need. You paid for the hotel room, you have every right to have access to the amenities, and that includes the provided water in the gym! So, save those bucks at the front desk, and head over to the hotel gym.
Other Ways To Get Free Water
While the hotel gym hack works most of the time, I also have a few other options for you. If the hotel that you’re staying in has a coffee shop (preferably a Starbucks) or anything similar, you can simply ask the workers to fill up your reusable water there. They tend to have filtered water in establishments like coffee shops or even bars, so you can trust that the water there is safe. To go the extra mile, you can also travel with a water bottle that has a filter in it–which are commonly seen in stores like Walmart, Target or Amazon.
Photo by Bluewater Sweden on UnsplashIf your hotel offers a free breakfast–definitely take advantage of this! Not only will you get a free meal (and you can grab some bananas for the road,) but you can also get free water here as well. Most hotel breakfasts have pitchers of water or water dispensers, so you can easily fill up some cups and pour it straight into your reusable water bottle. This will end up saving you tons of money in the long run, as buying water bottles constantly throughout your trip will continuously add up.
