Texas defeated Kentucky 16-13 in Lexington on Saturday night, narrowly avoiding a disastrous loss to a Wildcats team that has yet to win an SEC game this fall.
It took overtime, but the Longhorns were able to squeak out a win over Mark Stoops‘s Kentucky team. The Wildcats got the ball first in overtime and had several chances to score from inside the 5-yard line, but were unable to find the end zone. An inside run on fourth down was denied by Texas’s defensive front.
Texas faced a bit more adversity in overtime as it was hit with a holding penalty on its first play. However, the Longhorns were still able to get back into field goal range for Mason Shipley to kick the game-winner.
Texas was a double-digit favorite in this game but struggled mightily on offense. Arch Manning had another poor showing, as he went 11-for-25 for just 127 yards in regulation.
As a whole, the Texas offense managed just 3.3 yards per play. The Longhorns only cobbled together 47 rushing yards for the entire game as Kentucky’s defense was largely dominant. Of Texas’s 13 points in regulation, 10 came off of short fields that were earned by long punt returns.
Texas will go on the road to face Mississippi State next weekend.
