Shane Beamer gets defensive about potential staff changes following Oklahoma loss

South Carolina fell to 1-4 in SEC play with a 26-7 loss to Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon.

The result came less than a week after head coach Shane Beamer made the decision to part ways with offensive line coach Lonnie Teasley. South Carolina‘s offense still struggled in the loss to the Sooners in Week 8. The Gamecocks managed just 3.3 yards per play and struggled to run the ball outside of a strong opening series.

After the game, Beamer was asked about more potential changes to his offensive coaching staff.

“I made a change last week,” Beamer said, cutting off the report’s question about offensive coordinator Mike Shula. “Every week, we’re continuing to look at how to be better. Every week I do that.”

The reporter then began to ask a question about what gives him “hope” South Carolina could still turn things around this season. After initially calling for the next question, Beamer reversed course and decided to answer.

“What gives me hope? I see the way we practice during the week,” Beamer said. “What gives me hope? I see the number of guys we had out today, that I wasn’t even sure would be able to play, that fought their asses off to get back out there and be healthy and play today. What gives me hope? I know the talent we have on our offense.

“And what I just told our team, we’re not playing up to our potential right now. I am not getting the most out of this team right now. Offensively, defensively and special teams.”

    Here’s a clip from Beamer’s press conference:
