American Airlines Passengers Are About to Get a Serious Coffee Upgrade on Flights: This is Kind of Awesome

You don't have to be a frequent flyer to know that airplane coffee is seriously lacking. Brown, thin, not much oomph. Most flyers typically purchase their coffee before the gate if they need that morning or afternoon jolt.

But American Airlines just made an announcement that may change all that. Starting early 2026, the U.S. carrier will introduce premium coffee brand Lavazza on all cabins and at American’s Flagship and Admirals Club lounges across the system.

As part of their goal to roll out "more curated excellence" for customers traveling on their planes, they discovered coffee was a serious pain point.

“At American, we’re focused on looking at every aspect of the customer experience, and a quality cup of coffee is an important part of that journey,” said Heather Garboden, American's Chief Customer Officer. “We're proud to team up with this iconic brand to bring a rich, satisfying coffee experience to our customers—whether they're in the air or relaxing in our lounges.”

It's a long-overdue move that has fans saying hallelujah.

On a recent Reddit thread discussing the news, one commenter said, "Damn WiFi and legit coffee next year? Moving up in the world. This in-flight coffee drinker approves."

Others said it will be a welcome change: ("Good because their coffee is horrible.") Voiced another, "Honestly, this is kind of awesome."

And another cheered the choice to go with the popular Italian coffee brand, saying, "I’m a LaColombe guy, being local to Philly. But if have a second choice it’s Lavazza, I rotate through both to brew my hot and cold brew at home."

And others went down the rabbit hole of Italian coffee brands, arguing whether Naples' based brand Kimbo may have been a better choice than the Turin-based brand. Others argued that it wouldn't have the scale to satisfy demand.

Why Did American Airlines Choose Lavazza?

American Airlines explained the choice of global roaster Lavazza, stating the coffee maker has everything the carrier could want: a long legacy of crafting premium coffee all around the world, from the highest-end hotels to homes.

"Lavazza, a family-owned Italian brand since 1895, is dedicated to crafting exceptional coffee experiences that reflect a legacy of expertise, passion and innovation. For the last 130 years, Lavazza has been at the forefront of coffee craftsmanship, blending time-honored Italian traditions with modern techniques to create premium coffees that are rich, balanced and universally admired," said American Airlines in a statement.

"Today, its premium blends are served in top restaurants and hotels around the world, making it a natural fit for American's elevated hospitality offering. By partnering with Lavazza, American is bringing a globally respected name in coffee to its customers—one that aligns with the airline’s focus on refined offerings and exceptional service throughout the journey.

Lavazza shared its excitement about the deal. "Partnering with American Airlines allows us to bring the true Lavazza experience to travelers around the world,” said Hossam Ashraf, Americas President at Lavazza Group. “At Lavazza, we believe in creating moments of pleasure and connection through coffee, and collaborating with a brand that shares our commitment to exceptional experiences helps strengthen our presence and footprint in the market."

The move has fans percolating on other ideas. "Selling espresso would be a nice upgrade!" said another commenter. Maybe with the Italian brand on board, a full coffee bar will be in passengers' futures.
