Alice Cooper Shares Heartbreaking Message Following Rock Legend’s Death

The death of KISS legend Ace Frehley has spawned loving and nostalgic tributes from many big names in the music world, but one of the most poignant posts came from fellow ’70s rocker Alice Cooper.

Following Frehley’s death at age 74, Cooper, 77, posted a throwback Instagram photo of him posing with the late guitar legend, with a heartbreaking caption and accompanying audio.

“The worst part of being in rock ‘n’ roll at this point is the fact that some of our fraternity have just reached that age where they’ve… they leave the planet,” Cooper said. “Some of the guys that started 30, 40, 50 years ago are starting to go, and of course Ace Frehley from KISS, one of the pioneers - one of the great guitar players out there…Ace was an absolute guitar hero to so many people.”

Cooper went on to praise Frehley for bringing it “every night” onstage during the many tours they did together over the past decades. “He did it every night. And… it’s just hard to see somebody like that go,” Cooper wrote.

2025 has been a difficult year for rock legends. In addition to the loss of Frehley, music fans have mourned the deaths of Bad Company guitarist Mick Ralphs, Iron Maiden vocalist Paul Mario Day, and Black Sabbath legend Ozzy Osbourne so far this year.

Cooper reflected on Osbourne’s legacy days after his July 22 death, which took place less than three weeks after Osbourne's Back to the Beginning farewell show in Birmingham, England.

“Even though you know it's coming, especially with Ozzy, especially with certain guys in rock, where you go, you know, he certainly hasn't been well for a while. But I mean, what a what a shock to the system,” Cooper told Planet Rockin an interview.

Cooper once admitted he didn’t expect to live long, given his hard-rocking lifestyle. In a 2021 interview with The Telegraph, the “School’s Out” singer recalled his early days on the Sunset Strip and his membership in the Hollywood Vampires drinking club with other rock stars such as The Who’s Keith Moon and The Monkees’ Micky Dolenz.

“At that point, nobody thought about getting past 30,” Cooper said. “It was the party that never ended.” Cooper ultimately quit drinking in 1983.

Decades later, Cooper and fellow surviving rockers have some other problems.  “At this point now, I would say, anybody that's in the rock and roll business and is still around after 50 years -- and there's a lot of bands that are out there -- we all have hearing problems,” he told the Starkey Sound Bites podcast in 2024
