Crean Lutheran football cruises past La Habra to stay undefeated

IRVINE — Last season, La Habra and Crean Lutheran played a close game in what was the de facto Epsilon League championship game with La Habra coming away with the win.

Crean Lutheran didn’t keep the game close Friday and cruised to a 56-21 win over La Habra at Crean Lutheran High.

The Saints (8-0, 3-0) will play Huntington Beach on Friday, Oct. 24, for what will likely be the Epsilon League championship game. Huntington Beach is also 3-0 in league play after beating Foothill on Friday.

Caden Jones was excellent for Crean Lutheran at quarterback. The junior completed 19 of 23 passes for 314 yards with five touchdowns. Jones is also a point guard on the basketball team at Crean Lutheran.

“Caden is pretty special,” Crean Lutheran coach Rick Curtis said. “He makes things happen. He’ll scramble, make plays and find guys open. He’s a point guard. He sees the field the whole play.”

Jones spread the ball around well and threw touchdown passes to three different receivers. Ty Johnson was one of the leading receivers for the Saints with 112 yards on five receptions and two touchdowns. He also returned an interception for a touchdown on defense.

Johnson is a junior transfer from Lampasas High in Texas. He has scholarship offers from Arizona State, Texas Tech, UCLA and Washington among others.

“I didn’t really play a lot of defense at my old school so it’s fun to get out there and tackle people,” Johnson said. “I like scoring touchdowns, but tackling and rushing off the edge is really fun.”

Bryce Coleman, a senior transfer from Loyola, caught six passes for 131 yards with two touchdowns.

DJ Mitchell threw for 218 yards with two touchdowns for La Habra (5-3, 1-2) but only completed 42 percent of his passes. Crean Lutheran’s defense pressured Mitchell throughout the game and had five sacks.

One downside for Crean Lutheran was excessive penalties that extended drives for La Habra. The Saints had 18 penalties for 195 yards with 125 of them coming in the first half.

“I think a lot of it in the first half was being so amped for the game,” Curtis said. “It was a really big game and on some of those penalties we were over-aggressive. We definitely have to clean those up.”

Crean Lutheran scored near the end of the first quarter on a 44-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Johnson to give the Saints a 7-0 lead.

On the first play of the second quarter, Johnson intercepted a La Habra pass and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 14.

La Habra answered with a four-play, 70-yard scoring drive that ended with a 15-yard touchdown run by Bobby Brooks to cut the lead to 14-7. The Highlanders gained 77 yards on the final three plays of the drive.

Crean Lutheran responded with another touchdown pass from Jones to Johnson, this time from 42-yards out.

La Habra attempted to convert a fourth down from deep in its own territory. Crean Lutheran’s defense stopped the Highlanders and two plays later, Jones threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Dillon Booth to give the Saints a 28-7 lead.

Just before halftime, Mitchell threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Barrett Blied, who made a diving catch, to make the score 28-14 at halftime.

Caleb Bey ran for two touchdowns for Crean Lutheran in the second half and Jones threw two touchdown passes to Coleman.

Mitchell threw a touchdown pass to Bryce Vasquez in the fourth quarter for La Habra. Vasquez had 75 yards receiving and Blake Rogers had 116 yards on five catches.

Ryder Barnes had two sacks for Crean Lutheran. Anthony Jones, Damari Hall and Allitoa Nansen also had sacks for the Saints.
