We want title - SRH owners issue ultimatum to Pat Cummins, furious with Mohammed Shami

The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) owners are determined to win the title in the upcoming season of the IPL and are expected to make some ruthless calls ahead of the mini-auction. They might be aiming to axe Mohammed Shami after a dismaying season in 2025.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad, champions of the 2016 edition of the IPL, have invested a lot in their current team over the past few years. Having roped in World Cup-winning Australian skipper Pat Cummins, they reached the finals of IPL 2024 but ended up as runners-up to the Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata Knight Riders.

The last season was further disgusting for the IPL franchise, as they finished 6th in the points table after a decent end to the season. The first half of the season saw the Sunrisers reduced to minnows despite their power-packed squad.

Sunrisers Hyderabad had won an IPL title in the last decade, back in 2016, under the leadership of David Warner - the greatest ever player in the Sunrisers camp. They have played two more finals since then, one in the 2018 IPL under Kane Williamson and then in 2024 under Pat Cummins, but ended up as runners-up.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad side also owns multiple other teams across several global T20 leagues. They have the Sunrisers Eastern Cape playing in the SA20 league and have recently acquired the Northern Superchargers team from Yorkshire in the Hundred.

"SRH are in offensive mode as far as this IPL season is concerned. The message has been clear that they have to win a title this time. They feel that they have invested a lot in this current setup under Pat Cummins," TOI journalist Sahil Malhotra said.

SRH to make ruthless calls ahead of mini-auction

After a terrible season last time, the Sunrisers will have to make some tough calls, even if it means heartbreak to some of the finest players. Mohammed Shami had a disaster of a season for the SRH team after being bought for a mammoth INR 10 crores.

As suggested by the reporter, "The owners are ruthless as far as winning is concerned. They have delivered a clear message before the mini-auction that whatever changes are required should be made."

"They are probably thinking of dropping Mohammed Shami from the team, since they were very disappointed by Shami's performance and fitness last season. SRH wants to win the title, and they are ready to go to any extent to win this season."

Is this the end of Mohammed Shami's T20 career?

Legendary Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has picked 400+ international wickets across all three formats throughout his career. Moreover, Shami is India's highest wicket-taker in ODI World Cups as well as in all ICC tournaments combined. He was also the best performer with the ball in both the ICC World Cup 2023 and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Despite all this inevitable success, one thing that has often troubled him is his frequent injuries, which kept him out of the field for long periods. Shami has featured for several IPL franchises like the Kings XI Punjab, Delhi Daredevils, Gujarat Titans, and the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

However, with Shami missing out on most games due to injury and his economy shooting up to its worst in the last season, not only will SRH be willing to part ways with the player, but any other franchise's interest is also doubtful in the Indian pacer. The retentions are to be announced by the 15th of November, and Shami's fate would also be sealed on that day.
