‘It Helps People’: Melissa Claire Egan Opens Up About Emotional Young and the Restless Storyline on Mental Health (Exclusive)

Melissa Claire Egan had a powerful year as The Young and the Restless’ Chelsea Lawson, and she’s proud of the meaningful stories her character helped tell. On the Daytime Emmys red carpet, Egan spoke with Parade about the importance of portraying her on-screen son Connor’s (Judah Mackey) mental health journey.

Reflecting on the mental health storyline, Egan shared, “My favorite part of telling the story about Connor's mental health is that it's so important and imperative to what people are going through right now.”

Egan explained that while soaps can often serve as an escape for their audience, they also have the ability to reflect real issues that impact viewers’ lives. “I think it's so fun on these shows to do the fun sexy storylines and like cheating on each other and that drama, but I think when you tell mental health storylines it really helps people. It affects people.”

Egan also reflected on telling Chelsea’s own mental health crisis a few years prior, adding, “I know it did when we told the mental health storyline for Chelsea a couple years ago. So then when the writers decided to tell a mental health story about her son, I thought that was so brilliant.”

The Daytime Emmy-nominated actress added that the show took care to portray the subject matter responsibly. “Because a lot of parents are suffering, and a lot of kids are suffering right now.” Egan said. “That's actually why we work with the mental health association, and the Kids Mental Health Association to learn more about that because, the last thing you want it for your kids to be suffering, so I think it's, I think it was a really important storyline.”

Egan is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. When she found out the news, she shared, “The first thing I did when I found out I was nominated was call my husband to let him know.”

She went on to share a fun story sharing of how she found out, “I was really excited.” She said. “ I was driving home, so when I got home, I told my kids, and they're 2 and 4 and they didn't care. They didn't care at all. So, I called my husband, he cares. They still don't care. They still don't care, and they even saw me leaving today and they were like, what's this about? Maybe in a couple of years they'll care.”

The Young and the Restless airs weekdays on CBS and streams weeknights on Paramount+.
