Cameron Mathison said he is having a lot of fun with his current storyline on General Hospital. The actor talked with Parade while walking the red carpet at the Daytime Emmy Awards, and he said he's "just super grateful" for the opportunity he's been given.
As Mathison shared from the red carpet, General Hospital viewers do not yet know who shot his character, Drew Cain. He said, "I don't even know who shot me." There are plenty of possible culprits, and no matter how it plays out, Mathison said it's been "really, really fun."
Mathison noted that he's been in the soap opera world for 30 years. Given all of his experience, he admitted, "You can tell when a character is kind of going down a darker road. And you're like, 'I'm not 100% sure this is a good sign.'"
While he may not have been too sure about this direction initially, "It was fun and I'm willing to dive in."
When Mathison first joined General Hospital, he noted that he was only supposed to be around for three months. However, he pointed out, that initial short-term gig turned into a three-year contract, "which is turning into more."
"Frank [Valentini] has gone way above and beyond, and I really actually love what I get to do with this character, because he's hard to like and I love it," Mathison gushed.
As Soap Opera Digest noted in September, Mathison's character was shot twice in the back and left to die. He told the media outlet, "Obviously, everybody hates me like crazy...They can't just have people not like me. They have to have people want to kill me!"
He added, "And in order to have multiple people want to kill you, you've got to be pretty despicable — and they've done a really good job with that with Drew!"
Becoming such a villain was a challenge for Mathison, but "I've trusted the process and now, it's become weirdly therapeutic," he told Soap Opera Digest.
