Actress Emily Deschanelis opening up about having some challenges while filming the beloved Fox procedural, Bones, which had a 12-season run until 2017.
During an October 2025 episode of actor Michael Rosenbaum's podcast, Inside of You, Deschanel referenced that she had the starring role of Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan, meaning her presence was required in many of the show's scenes, specifically during its earlier seasons. She also said she was "unbelievably exhausted" after some days of shooting.
She said while she was resilient, "there was a lot of nights of like crying in [her] bathtub."
Deschanel also explained she "was really struggling because [she had] never done a TV show before that." She clarified that while she had filmed television "pilots" and "done guest stars," she had never starred on a series.
"I had panic attacks. And I didn't recognize what that was until later on. But, yeah, it was really challenging. And I mean, I was kind of losing my mind. I think everybody doing that kind of work, especially first season on a drama, you kind of go insane," said Deschanel during the interview.
During the interview with Rosenbaum, Deschanel shared that she did get to work shorter hours when she was pregnant with her children, Henry, 14, and Calvin, 10. She clarified that she was still working "12-hour days" while she was pregnant with Henry and "10-hour days" during her second pregnancy.

During a June 2025 appearance at the Fan Expo Dallas, Deschanel shared her fondest memories while working with her Bones castmate, which include David Boreanaz, Michaela Conlin, T. J. Thyne, Tamara Taylor, and John Francis Daley. She said that during late-night shoots, some of her co-stars, particularly Thyne, who played Dr. Jack Hodgins, and Taylor, who played Dr. Camille "Cam" Saroyan, would get "real loopy." According to Deschanel, Thyne and Taylor "would be the goofiest, giggliest of two people," which made it hard for her to maintain her composure.
"I'd be like trying to focus, trying not to laugh. 'You guys come on, come on, stop laughing.' And then we'd all end up laughing," said Deschanel during the panel.
She also shared that she and Eric Millegan, who played Zack Addy, enjoyed singing song tunes together.
