The Denver Broncos made a roster move on Friday, just a couple of days prior to their Sunday afternoon showdown with the New York Giants. Denver now has one spot available on the active roster, which could very well clear the way for linebacker Dre Greenlaw to make his season debut.
The Broncos released veteran quarterback Sam Ehlinger, per the NFL’s transaction wire. Because Ehlinger is a veteran player, he is not subject to waivers and can sign back immediately to the Broncos’ practice squad, which is the plan.
He’s been Denver’s third emergency quarterback designation since the season began, and he’ll likely be elevated as the emergency quarterback on Sunday when he signs back onto the roster on Saturday.
This move creates space on Denver’s active roster, where the hope and trending belief is that Dre Greenlaw will be moved off of injured reserve on Saturday and onto the active roster, putting him in line to make his Broncos’ debut against the Giants on Sunday.
He’ll likely be on a pitch count for a handful of weeks as he continues to get more acclimated to being on the field, but players inside the locker room are excited for him to make his debut.
Denver Broncos host a pair of offensive linemen for tryouts
The Broncos hosted a pair of former offensive linemen on Friday for tryouts. Veteran offensive tackle Cam Fleming and Marques Cox tried out on Friday, but did not sign to Denver’s practice squad.
There’s still a chance one of them could, but that would require a corresponding roster move by the Broncos.
Fleming and Cox are viewed as two players who possess guard/tackle versatility and have obvious familiarity with Sean Payton, with Fleming having been on Denver’s active roster in the past and Cox being a member of the Broncos roster during training camp.
Alex Palczewski is expected to get the start at left guard this Sunday, as Garett Bolles spilled the beans on Thursday.
