80s Pop Star Cyndi Lauper Reveals Which Gracie Abrams Song Makes her Cry

Cyndi Lauper is a Gracie Abrams fan?

In the most recent episode of "Musicians on Musicians" by Rolling Stone, the 1980s pop icon and rising pop star sat down together in a studio in Brooklyn, New York, and gushed over each other, their careers and their songwriting processes.

Abrams, whose fanbase is majority Gen-Z girls, quickly rose to fame after opening for multiple shows during Taylor Swift's Eras Tour from March 2023 to December 2024. Last summer, she released her hit album, The Secret of Us, which included a collaboration with Swift and was nominated for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album last year at the Grammys.

Meanwhile, Lauper burst onto the music scene more than 40 years ago with her debut album She's So Unusual in 1983, and her hits such as "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and "Time After Time." Since then, she has been a trailblazer for women in pop. Beyond her success, Lauper has championed LGBTQ+ rights and humanitarian causes, using her platform to advocate for equality. Decades later, her influence still continues to shape the next generation of pop music and culture.

Throughout the interview, the "That's So True" singer gushed to Lauper that she was her mom's favorite artist and that she grew up listening to her music all the time.

"I feel that way the older I get. [I'm] more and more grateful to the fact that I was raised in a house where your music was playing," Abrams told Lauper. "My mom was so drawn to your music because she had a lifetime of instances where you soundtracked."

At the beginning of the interview, the 72-year-old singer told Abrams that she has listened to her whole discography, which includes her two EPs, Minor (2020)and This is What It Feels Like (2021),and her two studio albums,Good Riddance (2023) and The Secret of Us (2024), which both have deluxe versions.

"When I was listening to 'I Know It Won’t Work,' I started crying," Lauper told Abrams, referring to the second track of Good Riddance.

"What? Don't say that to me. I can't believe you listened to any of the music," Abrams replied. "Just having grown up with your voice in the house all the time..."

Gracie Abrams, wearing CHANEL, attends the CHANEL dinner to celebrate the launch of Sofia Coppola's book, "CHANEL Haute Couture" at Double's Club on September 10, 2025.

Currently, Lauper is focusing on a stage musical adaptation of the 1988 film Working Girl, preparing for a Spring 2026 Las Vegas residency and continuing her human rights advocacy. She also completed a farewell tour earlier in 2025 and is set to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Meanwhile, Abrams wrapped up The Secret of Us Tour last month, capping off nearly four years on-and-off the road performing songs from her EPs and studio albums, as well as opening for Swift.

Fans can watch the rest of the interview on Rolling Stone's official YouTube account. Other artists that will be interviewed these upcoming days for the publication's annual "Musicians on Musicians" sessions include Jack Antonoff and Hayley Williams, Janelle Monaé and Lucy Dacus, Black Thought and Redman, Amaarae and Tinashe, and ROLE MODEL and Maria Zardoya.
