The executive board of commonwealth sport has said they will recommend Ahmedabad, India as the host of the 2030 Centenary Commonwealth games.
A litany of issues have fettered hosts of the games in recent years, leaving very few countries willing to put forth bids. The only other bid to host the 2030 games came from Nigeria, and was described as “ambitious” by the Commonwealth Sport executive board.
In 2017, the city of Durban, South Africa lost its hosting rights for the 2022 games after not meeting financial requirements. The games were only saved when the British government stepped in to provide significant financial support and offered to host the 2022 games in Birmingham.
The 2026 games were plunged into chaos when Victoria, Australia, pulled out as its host due to financial barriers. Glasgow was announced as the new host, but the British government was not willing to support the games in the same way they did in 2022, which has led to a dramatically reduced schedule and many sports, including diving, being axed.
These events have resulted in the Commonwealth Games being forced into countries that view them as something that can promote growth in their nation. That list includes India, despite challenges faced by the last edition of the Commonwealth Games in India.
The 2010 Commonwealth Games, hosted in Delhi, India, were sodden with issues. A footbridge built for the games collapsed, as did newly constructed ceiling panels above a weightlifting stage. There were incomprehensible cost overruns and accusations of corruption surrounding the allocations of funds were rampant.
There were also many complaints about the cleanliness of the athlete village. Many swimmers fell ill with a variety of intestinal illnesses, and rampant mosquito populations in the village led Annamay Pierse, the world record holder in the women’s 200 meter breaststroke at the time, to contract dengue fever.
This marked the end of Pierse’s international swimming career. Despite beating the disease, Pierse said her body did not respond and recover as it used to. She retired after failing to make Canada’s 2012 Olympic team.
While past history may cause trepidation among athletes, the hosting announcement is a boon for India. It serves as an opportunity for the nation to strengthen their bid to host the Olympics in Ahmedabad in 2036, and to push memories of the 2010 Commonwealth Games into the past.
Ahmedabad is located in western India with an estimated population of a little over nine million people. It is the 7th largest city in India based on population. The 2011 and 2023 Cricket World Cups were held in the city, which features the largest cricket stadium in the world, Narendra Modi Stadium.
The Commonwealth Games were first held in 1930, and occur every four years. The games are a competition between countries and territories within the Commonwealth of Nations. 72 teams competed at the 2022 games in Birmingham: 54 countries and 18 territories. Previous games have seen over 4,000 athletes attend. That number is expected to be around 3,000 in 2026.
The overall medal tables are usually dominated by Australia, England, and Canada. Australia is particularly dominant in swimming. India’s best result came from the 2010 Commonwealth games, where they finished second overall. Most recently, they finished fourth overall in Birmingham.
