Shuffling Through ’85: Bears Beat Packers Behind TDs From Sweetness & The Fridge

This year marks the 40th anniversary of one of the greatest Super Bowl runs and teams in NFL history – the 1985 Chicago Bears. All season long, we’ll go week by week, documenting the Bears‘ dominating run from Week 1 through the Super Bowl XX win in New Orleans.

Week 7: Chicago Bears 23, Green Bay Packers 7

The Chicago Bears wrapped up Week 7 of their triumphant 1985 NFL season by hosting Monday Night Football against the Green Bay Packers.

Chicago started off in a bizarre manner offensively by fumbling the ball away on their first three drives of the game, and with all three fumbles coming from different players. To their credit, players on the defensive side of the ball did their best to hold the Packers offense before eventually giving up a score that made it 7-0 Green Bay after the first quarter.

On the Bears’ fourth drive of the night, they made sure to hang onto the football. And it paid off. After an interception by defensive back Mike Richardson, Chicago got great field position at the Green Bay 31. Seven plays later, Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton hammered it in from two yards out to tie the ballgame.

After legendary Defensive Coordinator Buddy Ryan’s defense forced a Packers three-and-out, yet another fumble — this time from Sweetness, of all people — gave Green Bay the ball right back. Fortunately, Chicago’s defense came up big yet again. Wilber Marshall picked off Packers quarterback Lynn Dickey on the first play of Green Bay’s drive and gave the Bears the ball right back at the Packers’ 17-yard line. Three plays later, William Perry plunged in from the goal line to make it a 14-7 lead for Chicago.

After taking the lead, Mike Ditka’s team wouldn’t surrender it the rest of the way. Walter Payton added one more touchdown before the half to make it 21-7. Then, in the fourth quarter, Pro Bowl linebacker Otis Wilson sacked Packers’ backup quarterback Jim Zorn in the endzone for a safety, and 23-7 was how this one ended.
