Lucy Velte, a junior at Blue Valley North High School in Overland Park, Kansas, has made a verbal commitment to swim and study at Northwestern University in the class of 2031.

Velte swims year-round with Empire KC Swim Club and specializes in sprint back, fly, and free. We considered her a “Best of the Rest” recruit on our Way Too Early list of top girls’ swimmers in the high school class of 2027.
At 2024 Winter Juniors West, she dropped 1.5 seconds in the 200 IM to make the ‘C’ final with 2:01.60 and also earned lifetime bests in the 200 free (1:51.58) and 50 back (25.61), leading off the respective EKC relays. Two months later, she competed at the Missouri Valley Senior Championships and won the 50/100 free and 100 fly, and placed 4th in the 200 IM, picking up PBs in the 50 free (23.05), and 100 fly (54.05).
Velte concluded the 2024-25 short-course season at Columbia Sectionals, where she knocked the ball out of the park with all new times: 50 free (22.87), 100 free (50.17), 200 free (1:51.50), 50 back (24.67), 100 back (53.93), and 50 fly (23.98).
Velte went through similar rounds of improvement in long-course season and, after winning the 100 free (with a PB of 56.40) and placing 3rd in the 100 back (PB of 1:03.16) and 200 IM (2:18.14), she closed out the season at Summer Juniors in Irvine. There, she came in 3rd in the 100 fly (1:00.02), 4th in the 50 fly (26.84), 11th in the 100 free (56.29), and 12th in the 50 free (26.07).
Although we classed her among the top 2027 backstrokers in SCY, she showed her versatility in LCM with her sprint fly and free. Her flexibility should give Northwestern a lot of choices in which to develop her talent. In addition to her individual events, Velte projects to be a real asset for the Wildcats’ relays.
Northwestern is off to a strong start with class of 2027 recruiting; the three verbal commitments they have received so far are all from “Best of the Rest”-ranked swimmers: Velte, Annabeth Town, and Erin Griffis.
