LSU football news and notes
LSU enters this week coming off of a 20-10 win over South Carolina last week. Although the final score was relatively close, the Tigers were dominant — they outgained the Gamecocks by 2.3 yards per play (6.7 to 4.4). LSU’s defense continues to be the strength of this team. The Tigers completely shut down South Carolina’s passing attack led by LaNorris Sellers, who had averaged over 10 yards per attempt in each of his previous 2 games. Sellers threw for 124 yards on 27 attempts against LSU. The LSU defense is 12th nationally in schedule-adjusted EPA-per-play, according to Game on Paper. LSU’s top defensive player is arguably transfer cornerback Mansoor Delane, who was a big reason why South Carolina’s passing attack couldn’t get going last week. He’s allowed just 6 receptions on 22 targets this year, per PFF. That reception rate (27%) is by far the best in the nation among cornerbacks with at least 200 coverage snaps this season. LSU’s running game has been dormant this season but the Tigers had a strong showing against South Carolina in Week 7. Caden Durham averaged 4.7 yards per carry and Ju’Juan Johnson had 66 yards on 5 attempts. Garrett Nussmeier continues to be a concern. His average depth of target is way down this season as speculation over a torso injury has continued to linger. He threw 2 interceptions against South Carolina, which was a big reason why LSU didn’t win the game by a larger margin. Trey’Dez Green has emerged as an elite tight end nationally. He caught 8 passes for 119 yards and 1 touchdown in the win over South Carolina. Green missed some time this season due to a knee injury but it seems he’s poised to take on a bigger role in the offense moving forward.RELATED: Looking to bet on college football in Louisiana this weekend? Vanderbilt football news and notes
Vanderbilt is coming off of bye week. It lost a close game to Alabama last time out. The Commodores are 5-1 this season. Before facing Alabama, they had been largely dominant this season. On offense, they’ve averaged over 8 yards per play in 4 of 6 games so far this season. Defensively, Vanderbilt has allowed 5.1 yards per play across all of its games. Diego Pavia is the biggest reason for Vanderbilt’s leap on the offensive side of the ball. He’s averaging 8.8 yards per attempt, well above what he managed a season ago. The Commodores have a 49% passing rate this season. Last year, that number finished at just over 41%. Pavia is also a big part of Vanderbilt’s running game. He leads the team with 352 rushing yards so far this year. Sedrick Alexander has also been great — he’s averaging a career-high 6.5 yards per carry this year. However, he’s not been particularly explosive despite the high yards-per-carry average. He has just 2 rushes of 20+ yards this season. He only has 7 carries of 10+ yards and 3 of those runs came against Charleston Southern. Tight end Eli Stowers is a big name to know in Vandy’s passing offense, particularly with how well LSU has defended wide receivers this season. He often lines up as Vanderbilt’s slot receiver (61% of the time, per PFF). His 2.58 yards per route run is second among SEC tight ends with at least 15 targets this season. Defensively, Vanderbilt’s weakness is the passing game. The Commodores rank 111th in EPA-per-pass allowed, according to Game on Paper. Vandy conceded 11 yards per pass attempt to Alabama a couple of weeks ago. South Carolina and Utah State both managed more than 7 yards per pass attempt against the Commodores earlier in the year.LSU vs. Vanderbilt picks
I like Garrett Nussmeier’s passing yardage over prop in this game. While it’s true that Nussmeier (and the LSU offense in general) has been underwhelming this season, this Vanderbilt secondary really hasn’t provided much resistance at all this year. Particularly on key downs. It was the biggest reason — even more so than Diego Pavia’s turnovers — why Vanderbilt didn’t have a chance to win that game late. I think this is a get-right spot for the LSU passing offense and I think we’ll see the Tigers try to aggressively move the ball through the air.
Pick: Garrett Nussmeier over 256.5 passing yards (-113 on Caesars)
Trey’Dez Green to score a touchdown is way undervalued in this game in my opinion. Green is 6-7 and is coming off of an 8-catch breakout performance last weekend against South Carolina. Nussmeier was aggressively looking for Green last weekend. Per PFF, Green earned 11 targets on 32 pass snaps. We’ve already seen LSU use Green as a red zone threat this season — he caught what proved to be the game-winning touchdown against Clemson back in Week 1. Green is a mismatch waiting to happen and it seems he’s healthy enough to make a big impact.
Pick: Trey’Dez Green anytime TD scorer (+330 on DraftKings)
