Michael J. Fox Pulled This Iconic Back to the Future Wardrobe Item From His Own Closet

One of the most iconic items that became part of the outfit Michael J. Fox wore in Back to the Future wasn’t created by a costume designer; it was something he already owned.

In his new book Future Boy, Michael J. Fox reflects on his experience filming the 1985 blockbuster Back to the Future. He shares personal insights into stepping into the role of Marty McFly while juggling his iconic Family Ties character, Alex Keaton, and trying to stay grounded amidst the whirlwind.

However, in the chaos of his casting (he replaced Eric Stoltz, who was already cast as Marty McFly), there were several mishaps, including costuming. Fox revealed that one key element of Marty's overall look came straight from his own closet.

He wrote, "I brought a dash of my own style to Marty McFly; his Nike shoes were mine. On the day of the Malibu fitting, the costume department realized that in their rush to gather everything needed, they had left Marty's shoes back at the soundstage."

Fox continued, "I arrived at the meeting wearing my favorite Nikes, a pair of no-frills white Bruins with a red logo. They were my go-to sneaks, perfect for skateboarding and duckwalking, and kicking around. My chosen footwear that day had a long-lasting impact on the character and on Nike."

The Wall Street Journal reported that these classic movie kicks unexpectedly took on a whole new life. Fox needed more than one pair of shoes for filming, and the style was out of production, prompting the film's producer to rush into action.

Bob Gale revealed, “Our executive producer Frank Marshall contacted Nike and said, ‘Listen, we’re having Michael J. Fox wear these shoes,’” He continued, “And they said, ‘No problem, we’ll make a dozen pairs for you.’ That began our relationship with Nike."

Ironically, the shoes remain a hot ticket item for collectors. Resellers are charging thousands for the shoes, and the last reissue was in 2015, per HYPEBEAST.

Fun 'Back to the Future' Facts

Back to the Future (1985) not only changed the life of its star, Michael J. Fox, but it also left a lasting impression on movie fans worldwide. It was so popular, the original film generated two spinoffs, Back to the Future II (1989) and Back to the Future III (1990).

However, the film's backstory is as unique as its time-travel premise. Biography reported that director Robert Zemeckis got the idea for Marty McFly's visit to the past after seeing his father's high school yearbook and wondering if he and his dad would be friends if he lived during that era.

Additionally, the infamous DeLorean automobile that Marty uses to travel through time wasn't a part of the original script. Strangely, in the original version, Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) used a kitchen appliance, a refrigerator.

Finally, Back to the Future II and III were shot back-to-back, and filming took nearly one year. The actors reportedly had almost one month off in between filming the second and third installments, which were released one year apart.

Future Boy, written by Michael J. Fox and Nelle Fortenberry, is currently available in stores and online.
