As even the most casual fans of the franchise are sure to know, Alien and its immediate sequel Aliens remain undisputed classics in the larger annals of science fiction.
Alien 3, on the other hand ... well, that remains somewhat less well-received.
The action-packed follow-up to James Cameron's revolutionary work on Aliens, Alien 3 continues to divide longtime Alien fans, with many viewing it as a disappointing step down from the first two entries in the series.
In spite of its poor critical reviews, however, star Sigourney Weaver maintains a favorable opinion of the 1992 sci-fi horror film, calling it one of the most unique installment within the series yet.
As reported by People magazine, the 76-year-old Weaver recently took to the stage at the New York Comic Con to discuss her past role as Ellen Ripley, the intrepid space traveler who appears in the first four Alien films.
When asked about her thoughts for 1992's controversial Alien 3, the Ghostbusters star discussed her personal affinity for the movie, as well as her positive memories working with director David Fincher.
"I like it because it's so utterly different from the first two," Weaver told moderator Josh Horowitz. "I felt that [20th Century] Fox was smart to keep choosing very gifted directors who wanted to do something completely different with the Alien story."
In spite of her fondness for the film, Weaver did mention some challenges the cast and crew faced in production, including a changing script that might have impacted the film's eventual narrative.
"I feel like David [Fincher] would've loved a chance to work on the script before we had to start shooting," Weaver explained. "We did delay but not enough for him to feel he'd solved a lot of the problems."
At the end of the day, though, Weaver said she prefers to judge every Alien film on its own merits, allowing her to revisit each movie without comparing them to one another.
"I think we had the most amazing group of actors, amazing crew," she concluded of Alien 3. "It's meaningful to me and I don't really compare them."
