Amelia Will Be Missing on 'Grey's Anatomy' While on a Sabbatical
On Thursday's episode, Amelia decided to take a sabbatical after struggling to cope following the death of Dr. Monica Beltran (Natalie Morales) in the season premiere. Her "sisters," Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Dr. Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary), attempted an intervention. However, Amelia still felt responsible for Beltran's death because it was the mother of her patient, Dylan, who caused the explosion that killed her.

Scorsone will reportedly be MIA from Grey's Anatomy for the next eight episodes, Deadline reported. The actress won't return as Amelia until 2026.
Beginning with the 2024/25 season of the show, Grey's Anatomy reduced the minimum guarantee for veteran cast members to 14 out of the 18 episodes per season. This cost-saving move also applies to the 2025/26 season. However, Scorsone will reportedly only appear in 10 out of the 18 episodes in Season 22.
Is Caterina Scorsone Leaving 'Grey's Anatomy'?
Scorsone has been a primary cast member on Grey's Anatomy since Season 7 after her character, the sister of Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), was introduced in Private Practice. As of writing, the showrunners have not said that Scorsone is leaving Grey's Anatomy.
After the Season 21 finale, executive producer Meg Marinis offered insight into what's in store for Amelia's future.
“She was very medical this season,” Marinis told Deadline. “We’ll see if her strive and desire to keep taking on medical cases, we’ll see if that continues after what happens to Dylan. I think that’s a moment of hubris for her. She took on something that, there’s a possibility she shouldn’t have operated on that girl to begin with.”
