The victim told officers he was walking away from his parked and idling car when another car drove up and a man got out. The man then hopped into the victim’s car, police said.
The victim tried to pull the man out of the car, which led to a struggle. The man then drew a knife and lunged at the victim, according to police. The victim was not injured.
Police said the man drove away in the victim’s car and was followed by the other car.
A months-long investigation led to the identification of the primary suspect as a 25-year-old man and the driver of the other car as a 22-year-old man, both of Oakland.
By then, the primary suspect was already in custody for unrelated charges, police said, adding that “the crimes of carjacking and assault with a deadly weapon were added to his booking sheet.”
Members of the California National Guard helped police find the 22-year-old man, who was arrested Wednesday in Oakland.
A San Mateo police spokesperson said a Cal Guard analyst is assigned to the department only for narcotics investigations through the governor’s office. Because the primary suspect was involved in a previous investigation with the department, Cal Guard members conducted surveillance in the case, but they did not assist in the arrest.
The man was booked into San Mateo County jail on suspicion of carjacking and assault with a deadly weapon.
