ANAHEIM — Beckman running back Makhi Czaykowski scored all five of his team’s touchdowns in a 35-24 win over Kennedy on Thursday night at Western High School.
The Patriots (5-3, 3-0) are now all alone in first place in the Lambda League thanks to a four-game winning streak.
Beckman coach Marcello Giuliano took most of the responsibility for his team’s 1-3 start this season.
“I was pretty open with this with the kids, and I had not done a great job of being their head coach,” Giuliano said. “And so, you know, I had to redouble my efforts. I don’t think that was on the kids necessarily. We had to change some things schematically to put our athletes in better situations to succeed.”
“Then on their and on the boys’ end, we had to quit giving the ball away and quit letting people score in one play,” he continued. “We’ve been able to keep a lid on that, and that has helped us to play better football in the second chapter of the season.”
The Patriots received a superb performance from Czaykowski, a three-year varsity player who scored three rushing touchdowns and two receiving while gaining nearly 200 all-purpose yards.
“He’s not looking for the spotlight, you know, but he’s a three-year varsity guy,” Guiliano said. “And he just, he just comes out and has fun and plays (hard). Obviously we can do a lot of different things with him and that’s what makes it rough on defenses.
“We don’t just have to hand the ball to him. Right? But I think the number one thing is, like, he plays, you know, within the team structure and he knows he’s better when everybody’s firing and we’re spreading the ball around.”
Giuliano’s words were evident on Beckman’s opening drive as Noah Nam found Czaykowski on a wheel route downfield for a 34-yard TD pass.
A unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Czaykowski after the score was enforced on the kickoff, which gave Kennedy great field position.
Mahseiah Banks and quarterback Brandon Hahm led the Fighting Irish down field for a 47-yard scoring drive that tied the game 7-7 on Hahm’s 7-yard keeper.
The Patriots retook the lead in the second quarter when Czaykowski scored his second TD of the night on a 12-yard run.
The Fighting Irish (4-4, 1-2) converted a 36-yard field goal by Joey Villagrana in the second quarter before Czaykowski added a 5-yard TD catch with 16 seconds left in the half to give Beckman a 21-10 advantage.
Kennedy coach Toa Siatunu’u was pleased with the effort of his players.
“I couldn’t ask for more from the way we competed tonight as a unit but, you know, it’s time to get back to the drawing board.” Siatunu’u said. “Obviously, we got two tough opponents coming up as well (Marina and Sunny Hills), and keeping these kids spirits high is a big thing. We’re gonna keep grinding, you know what I mean? It’s not the outcome that we wanted, but I’m proud of the way we played.”
Giuliano feels like his team has yet to play its best game of the season and hopes to put it all together next week against Valencia.
“I think Valencia, just throw the record out,” he said. “I know the coaching staff, they’re going to be super sound on defense. They’re big, they’re always physical. It’s another one of those games where we have to shore up our tackling and our blocking, like, just fundamentals. We also have to get rid of those pre-snap penalties that move us back, right? And, if we can do those things, then I think we have a real good shot to win.”
