INGLEWOOD — The Edison-Los Alamitos rivalry in the Alpha League shifted to SoFi Stadium on Thursday with enticing offers beside the breathtaking NFL venue.

Edison aimed to build off its solid nonleague season by playing spoiler in the league opener.

Los Alamitos needed another win to match its best start since 1998 under legendary coach John Barnes.

Lenny Ibarra and the Griffins seized their chances after a blocked field goal and sprinted to 41-22 victory at the home of the NFL’s Rams and Chargers.

Los Alamitos (8-0, 1-0), ranked sixth in Orange County and 15th in the state by HSratings, erupted for 20 points to third quarter after blocking a field goal by No. 14 Edison (5-3, 0-1) late in the first half.

The special teams play sparked a squad competing for the first time since Sept. 26.

“Completely flipped the game,” Los Alamitos coach Ray Fenton said of a block that appeared to come from the middle of the line. “We have an amazing group of kids because there is no blue print for having a double bye.”

Ibarra busted numerous tackles for a season-high 216 yards on 17 carries. The senior scored on touchdown runs of 75 and 7 yards to open the scoring in the third quarter.

Los Alamitos’ outburst also included a 74-yard touchdown reception by Boise State committed tight end Beckham Hofland from Colin Creason. That connection pushed the Griffins’ lead to 41-14.

Late in the first half, Edison attempted a 41-yard field goal looking to extend a 16-14 advantage. But Los Alamitos’ Oscar Ocampo alertly scooped up the deflection at his 11 and returned it all the way to the Edison 2.

Two plays later, Creason scored on a 1-yard run with 1:43 left in the half as the Griffins opened a 21-16 lead.

“Totally changed momentum,” Edison coach Jeff Grady said of the block. “We’re going in to expand on our lead and before you know it, they got the lead.”

“They’re a very good football team,” the coach added.

The special teams play helped Los Alamitos zap the momentum of Edison, which took its first lead in the middle of the second quarter.

Edison running back Samuel Edmisten scored his second touchdown of the half on a 7-yard run as the Chargers took a 16-14 advantage. Edmisten finished with 165 yards rushing and scored two TDs.

Ibarra, who is committed to Army, ran to the right on his 75-yard score and found a lane between pulling linemen Jackson Turek and Braiden McKenna.

Los Alamitos finished with 360 yards on the ground. Running back Kamden Tillis rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown and Creason added 35.

“The (offensive line), they always do their job,” Ibarra said of a group that included Luke Wehner, Tufi Lafaele and Luke Tomczyk. “We just play with each other, play as a brotherhood, and it shows.”

Ibarra also made a one-handed catch and played safety.

Edison quarterback Sam Thomson completed 32 of 50 passes for 311 yards and two TDs. All the numbers were season-highs for the junior. Matthew Auau had 10 catches for 112 yards and a touchdown.

Next week, Los Alamitos plays at No. 12 San Clemente on Oct. 24. Edison plays host to No. 1 Mission Viejo at Huntington Beach High on the same day.
