Alex Palczewski “ready for the challenge” of starting at left guard, Broncos LT Garett Bolles says

The Broncos appear to have a plan at left guard.

Asked about the prospect of playing next to a third left guard in as many weeks, Broncos veteran left tackle Garett Bolles on Thursday said that third-year man Alex Palczewski, who has served as the primary backup on the right side of the offensive line and is Denver’s jumbo tight end, is “ready for the challenge” of stepping into the starting lineup.

It’s a challenge for Bolles, too, who played 39 straight games next to Ben Powers before Powers tore his left bicep late in Denver’s win at Philadelphia. Then Matt Peart stepped in last week against the New York Jets, tore his left MCL on the third snap of the game, and gritted through the final 57 plays of the day.

Now, Palczewski, a 2023 undrafted free agent out of Illinois, is a strong candidate to get the next crack.

“I’m ready to be there for him and protect him as much as I can and make sure that he feels comfortable,” Bolles said. “This ain’t my first rodeo playing with different guards. I’ve done it for a long time here. Obviously, having a consistent guy like Ben that I’ve played so many games with just made me feel comfortable, but I’m used to this and I’m ready for the challenge.”

Palczewski started three games last year at right tackle when Mike McGlinchey was on injured reserve before he sustained an injury himself. He played in 14 games overall last year and had appeared in every game this season as a jumbo tight end.

He became a crowd favorite at Empower Field, drawing roars when the officiating crew announced that he’d reported as an eligible receiver in Denver’s jumbo packages.

Now he’s got an opportunity at an extended stint starting considering Peart is likely out for the season and Powers isn’t expected back until December.

“Our whole o-line is deep,” Bolles said. “We have a lot of depth that can plug and play at all different positions. Obviously, Ben is my guy. I’ve played a lot of games with him, and I hope he has a speedy recovery. That’s my guy, and he knows he’s my guy. I hope we can get him back as soon as possible.

“It’s an unfortunate situation for us, and then Matt going down, I love him. Having two guys go down that quick is a tough situation.”
