33 years ago today, legendary rock icon and folk singer Bob Dylan celebrated the 30th anniversary of his recording debut. How? Well, by putting on an absolutely star-studded show at Madison Square Garden on October 16, 1992 — and then putting out a live album of the incredible evening.
Dylan, 84, got in the studio for his first recordings in 1961 and debuted his first self-titled album the following year — a whopping 63 years ago — so in 1992, it made complete sense to celebrate his meteoric rise to superstardom in music. The event was called The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration, a name which stuck for the show’s eventual live-album release.
The epic show of course saw Dylan take the stage, but he was joined by an absolutely jaw-dropping roster of musicians who clearly wanted to celebrate him the way he deserved. The line-up consisted of Neil Young, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder, Lou Reed, Eddie Vedder, John Cougar Mellencamp, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, Ronnie Wood, Kris Kristofferson, Chrisse Hynde, Tom Petty, Sinead O’Connor, Tracy Chapman, and more.
Mellencamp, 74, opened the show with his rendition of “Like a Rolling Stone,” and Clapton, 80, closed out the first act of music with his version of “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right.” Toward the end of the night, Dylan came onstage to join his peers and perform a few solo tracks, as well as a song with Young, 79, Clapton, Harrison, who died of cancer less than a decade after this concert at 58, and Petty, who died of an accidental drug overdose in 2017 at 66.

Just before Dylan closed out the show alone with “Girl from the North Country,” the entire company of musicians joined the legendary singer to perform “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” a 1973 song Dylan wrote for Pat Garett and Billy the Kid.
Dylan also brought the surviving members of Booker T & The M.G.’s to play as the show’s house band. Booker T. Jones was on the organ, Donald "Duck" Dunn took on the bass, and Steve Cropper played guitar. Drummer Anton Fig filled in for the late M.G.’s drummer Al Jackson, and drummer Jim Keltner, known for being one of Dylan’s session drummers, played as well.
G. E. Smith, longtime Saturday Night Live bandleader, served as the music director of the whole concert. Considering his tenure as the initial lead guitar player in Dylan's Never Ending Tour in TK, he also served as a guitarist and mandolin player for several musicians during the event. Interestingly enough, country-pop legend Sheryl Crow served as a background singer during the show, alongside Canadian rock musician Sue Medley and others.
Young affectionately called the concert “Bobfest” during his “All Along the Watchtower” cover — and it’s hard to deny the effect the show had. The live album, which was released in August 1993, reached No. 40 on the charts in the United States and went gold, while a VHS tape of the event was also released at the same time.
In 2014, the concert was rereleased in 2-DVD and Blu-ray formats, which included behind-the-scenes rehearsal footage and bonus performances. A two-disc CD rerelease also included two bonus rehearsal tracks.
