Indiana sent a message to every coach-needy program in college football on Thursday.
Look elsewhere.
The school announced a new, 8-year contract extension with rising head coach Curt Cignetti on Thursday. The deal extends Cignetti through the 2033 regular season and bumps his average annual salary to $11.6 million.
Indiana is 6-0 to begin the season, ranked No. 3 in the latest AP poll, and is coming off its first-ever road win over an AP top-5 team. Cignetti is 17-2 with the Hoosiers to begin his tenure, including an 11-1 record against Big Ten teams.
“At Indiana University, we are committed to performing at the highest levels in everything we do, and no one has exemplified that more than Coach Cignetti,” IU president Pamela Whitten said in a statement. “Put simply, Cig is a winner. From last year’s College Football Playoff appearance to this year’s top-3 national ranking, the IU Football program’s success has been tremendous. Curt and Manette Cignetti are home in Indiana and we are delighted that the Cignetti family will be Hoosiers for many years to come.”
Cignetti is not quoted in the school’s announcement of his contract extension. IU athletic director Scott Dolson said the school is “committed to investing in IU Football in such a way that we can compete at a championship level.”
The third-place ranking in this week’s AP poll is the highest-ever ranking in Indiana football history.
Indiana made the College Football Playoff last season, Cignetti’s first with the program, and finished with a school-record 11 wins.
Following James Franklin’s firing at Penn State last weekend, Cignetti was immediately linked to the Nittany Lions as a possible replacement. Cignetti, a Pittsburgh native, began his coaching career as a grad assistant at Pitt in 1983 and coached in the state of Pennsylvania as an assistant from 1989-99.
Cignetti would have also been a popular name atop the list for Florida, if and when the school decides to move on from Billy Napier.
Now, arguably the hottest name on the coaching market is officially off the board. Cignetti’s new average annual salary would put him just behind Ryan Day as the third-highest-paid coach in college football.
(Depending on how the deal is actually structured, Cignetti could be anywhere between third and fifth. According to the USA Today database, USC’s Lincoln Riley is set to earn $11.5 million this season, while Dabo Swinney is set to make $11.4 million.)
Cignetti was scheduled to make $8.3 million this season.
