‘90s TV Icon, Who Played Hilary Banks on ‘Fresh Prince,’ Announces Exciting Career Pivot

Karyn Parsons was a staple of '90s TV, but her talents go far beyond acting.

The acclaimed actress, 59, rose to stardom in the role of vapid eldest sister Hilary Banks on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, opposite Will Smith, James Avery, and Tatyana Ali. While she became instantly identifiable thanks to her role on the beloved sitcom, which ran on NBC from 1990 to 1996, Parsons has shown the world that she can do a variety of other exciting endeavors as well. In a new Instagram post, Parsons revealed the cover for her new young adult novel, Blue Beach, which hits bookstore shelves this summer.

"COVER REVEAL! ??‍♀️??‍♀️??‍♀️It’s here! My new book, and YA debut, Blue Beach.?️ So excited!!!Thank you, @geraldmarc at #EuropaContent and @littlebrown And thank you @ukelaylie for a beautiful cover! ? PRE-ORDERS available now. Official release June 9, 2026," Parsons captioned the post, which features her smiling face as she holds the book in her hands. The photo reveals Parsons has barely changed in the two decades since she played Banks on the iconic sitcom.

While Blue Beach will be her debut YA novel, Parsons has a long literary history. She is the founder of Sweet Blackberry, an award-winning series of children’s animated films and books sharing stories of unsung black heroes in history. She's previously written two middle-grade novels, including How High The Moon and Clouds Over California. She has also authored several picture books, including Flying Free: How Bessie Coleman’s Dreams Took Flight and Sweet Blackberry’s Saving The Day.

Parsons is a New Englander Now

Parsons lives in Providence, Rhode Island, with her family, and she's taking her role as a New Englander seriously. Earlier this year, she led a lineup of 220 readers who came from near and far to step up to speak for 5- to 10-minute segments at the annual Moby Dick Marathon at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Fans of the Herman Melville novel read the tome out loud in the historic setting.

“It’s exciting to be part of it,” Parsons told the New Bedford Light back in January. “It’s a little daunting, I will admit.”
