Iconic Chef Teases She Might Have Inspired New Taylor Swift Song

Not only is Ina Garten an iconic chef, but she also may be the inspiration behind a line in Taylor Swift's new song "CANCELLED!"

In Swift's song “CANCELLED," which is featured on her October 2025 album The Life of a Showgirl, she sings, “Good thing I like my friends cancelled / I like 'em cloaked in Gucci and in scandal / Like my whiskey sour / And poison thorny flowers.”

Nearly two weeks after the album was released on October 3, Garten, 77, told People that she happened to serve Swift, 35, her first ever whiskey sour over one decade ago.

“So what happened was we were on the shoot and we were making a pavlova together,” Garten explained of a Food Network Magazine photo shoot they did in 2014. “So we were putting this together, and I don't know how it even came up, we were talking about cocktails. It was like 11 o'clock in the morning, and I said, my favorite cocktail's a whiskey sour. And she said, ‘Oh, I've never had one.’”

Luckily Garten already had a pitcher of the drink in her refrigerator, so she was able to help Swift enjoy the cocktail for the first time.

“At 11:30 a.m., she and I were drinking whiskey sours and making pavlova together. And I remember her saying to her mother, Andrea[Swift], ‘We're day drinking.’ It was just so sweet,” she recalled. “Yeah, I made her first whiskey sour.”

Garten went on to say that she couldn't confirmed if the experience inspired the line in the song, but she told the outlet she “hopes” it is true. “She inspires all of us, so I'm glad if I inspire her a little bit, that'd be great,” Garten said.

The song is about Swift embracing her friends, even when they have been "cancelled" in the public eye for both big and small controversies. Swift also notes in the song that she's been cancelled herself, which has inspired for her to have more sympathy for people in similar situations.

The admiration between Garten and Swift is mutual, as the "Love Story" singer previously praised the cookbook author during the Food Network Magazine's celebration of Barefoot Contessa’s 20th anniversary in October 2022.

"My most potent memories of Ina come from when I first discovered her TV show," Swift said at the time. "I was in my teens, and my life revolved around touring. On my rare days off at home, I barely ever cooked because it had always felt like a chore."

Swift went on to say that "watching Ina prepare a meal changed my perspective on cooking and reframed it as something relaxing."

"She made cooking feel like self-care," she continued. "Ever since, cooking has been my escape from stress and one of the only ways I can truly calm myself on a rough day. I'll always be grateful to her for giving me that."
