Ex-Bears Offensive Lineman Charles Leno Jr. Retires

One of the better Chicago Bears offensive linemen of recent vintage called it a career earlier in the week.

Charles Leno Jr., a Bears seventh-round draft pick in 2014 and Pro Bowler in 2018, announced his retirement in an Instagram post that went up two years to the day after his daughter’s death. It was an emotional tribute from Leno, who retired after playing 149 games for Chicago (2014-2020) and Washington (2021-23). NFL Network insider shared the news here:

Charles Leno Jr. retires from the NFL

Charles Leno Jr.’s career arc with the Bears was one of my favorites to follow as a writer. A seventh-round pick (246th overall) in 2014 by then-GM Phil Emery, Leno went from bottom-of-the-roster fodder in 2014 to a primary starter in 2015. Leno did not miss a game between 2015 and 2022, and started in 127 of a possible 130 games for the Bears and Commanders. That is a remarkable bit of durability at a position where you hope to get stability but know better than to expect it.

He was steady and reliable. He wasn’t flashy or dominant, but Charles Leno Jr. was good at a position that had been a revolving door of disappointment for the Bears. His single-best season came in 2018, when he started all 16 games for the Bears, played on 99 percent of the team’s offensive snaps, and was named to the Pro Bowl. Those 2018 Bears sure were something. Leno’s time with the Bears came to an end in May 2021, just months after I wrote this Charles Leno Jr. appreciation post. Chicago hasn’t had much stability at left tackle since his departure, which captures why I wrote that post in the first place.

I can’t imagine what it would be like losing a child, but reading Charles Leno Jr.’s emotional post gave me an idea of what family means to him. Hence, I can understand his decision to hang ’em up at the age of 34. Happy trails, Charles. Enjoy retirement. After a 10-year career in the NFL, you’ve certainly earned whatever rest, relaxation, and family time that comes with retirement.
