‘Seinfeld’ Legend Michael Richards Calls Turning Down Diane Keaton Project ‘One of My Great Professional Regrets

Michael Richards is looking back on one of his biggest professional regrets.

The comedy icon, 76, who rose to superstardom as Cosmo Kramer alongside Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus in the iconic NBC sitcom Seinfeld, which ran from 1989 to 1998, took to Instagram to reflect on his time working with Diane Keaton. However, he turned down the opportunity to work with her in a Steven Spielberg-produced film in which he'd play a dog, calling it "one of my great professional regrets."

"About three weeks before she offered me the role in Unstrung Heroes, Diane had an opportunity to direct a film called 'Pet People' for Steven Spielberg’s production company. Steven wanted me for the role about a dog magically turned into a man. Diane brought a ball to our meeting outside on a grassy area at Universal. She would throw it and I would chase it, running and jumping over bushes to fetch it. I would bring it back to her in my mouth and jump around and play like a dog. Diane laughed so hard while shooting it all," Richards recalled.

"She showed the footage to Spielberg and they both wanted me for the part. They wouldn’t make the movie without me. I had some doubts about the script and talked myself right out of the picture. I passed on it," he continued. "One of my great professional regrets. Diane would have pulled quite a performance out of me for sure. Oh, well. I’m glad I got to make her laugh, though. And what a laugh!"

Luckily, Richards had the opportunity to work with Keaton in her 1995 feature film debut, Unstrung Heroes, a comedy-drama also starring Andie MacDowell and John Turturro.

"She wanted me in it. 'He’s not just a funnyman,' she told people. 'He’s an actor.' Coming from her, that was high praise. In the picture here, I am with the fantastic Andie MacDowell and Diane at the Cannes Film Festival. It was an exciting time – hard for me as an introvert who shied away from promoting myself. Diane understood," Richards recalled. "She wanted me to feel comfortable. She was caring and sweet. She thought my kind of innocence was endearing. Of course, I knew she was a great actress. As I got to know her, I found out she was also a great person with a lot of heart. She could genuinely have fun and enjoy life- such an admirable, enviable quality."

Richards Recently Kicked Off a Mini-Tour

Last month, Richards hit the stage for the first time since 2006 to kick off his new mini-tour, “Michael Richards: An Evening of Conversations, Questions and Answers.” The iconic actor and comedian didn’t shy away from opening up about the horrific tirade he went on in 2006 during an appearance at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles, when he was heckled by an audience member and responded by repeatedly using the N-word, the Hollywood Reporter recalled.

"I was forced to revisit [my backstory] because 19 years ago, I was in a comedy club and I was a very naughty, naughty man,” he said of the 2006 incident, the Reporter continued. “That night, doing my act, I got interrupted, got heckled, and I really took it in the wrong way. It went really bad, and I said some awful things. Although I was trying to lift it into comedy, believe it or not, playing this idiot who’s a racist but I’m channeling all this goo-gah, which is what I do as a Dionysian most of the time. I don’t really work with an act, I’m very loose on stage, very loosey-goosey. That goosey got me into some trouble.”

Richards continued by saying that the initial break he took after the scandal ended up lasting 17 years. He did end up back in the public eye, however: The star released his memoir, Entrances and Exits, last year.
