On paper, this game shouldn’t be close. Texas is a double-digit favorite against Kentucky. There is no larger spread in the SEC this weekend. Despite this, ESPN’s Greg McElroy thinks there is cause for concern if you’re a Longhorn supporter. On a recent episode of the Always College Football podcast, McElroy classified Texas-Kentucky as a “trap game” for the Longhorns.
“You look at the scheduling. Third consecutive contest away from Austin. Super physical game, an emotional game, winning the Red River game,” McElroy said. “And there are some aspects of this with Kentucky… [who’s] battling to keep their season afloat… [the program] is facing a lot of pressure to show life against a quality opponent.”
McElroy believes the Wildcats need some help from the Longhorns if they’re going to pull an upset. In his mind, Kentucky’s defense will have to expose the “inconsistencies” of Texas’ offensive line. Doing so would allow the Wildcats to both pressure Arch Manning and draw flags on Texas, who ranks No. 122 in FBS in penalties. On the offensive side, quarterback Cutter Boley needs to “be a game manager” on “long, time-consuming drives” against the Longhorns’ defense.
If Kentucky can “possess the ball for over 35 minutes,” McElroy thinks the Wildcats will have a chance to win. However, the likelihood of that happening, in his opinion, is slim. He put it “at about 10%.” Kickoff between Texas and Kentucky is 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday (ESPN).
