SAN JOSE — A man died after a garbage truck ran over him as he slept in an alley early Thursday, police said.
The collision was reported around 4:05 a.m. at a strip mall in the 2800 block of Bascom Avenue, according to the San Jose Police Department.
An initial investigation determined that the victim, described only as a man, was covered in blankets and lying in a driveway just off Shamrock Drive when the driver of a Peterbilt garbage truck hit him.
The injured man was taken to a hospital where he died, police said. His name was not publicly released pending his formal identification and notification of his next of kin by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.
Police said the driver stopped at the scene, and there is no indication that he was arrested or cited.

On Jan. 22, 2024, a man was hit while walking at McKendrie and Elm streets, near the lacrosse and soccer fields for Bellarmine College Prep off West Hedding Street, and died a few days later. On Feb. 8, 2024, a woman was hit while walking at South White and Tully roads, and died three months later.
