When the sun goes down and the moon comes up, that’s when the creeps and ghouls come out to party. And no band made monster music quite like The Cramps. Founded by the husband-wife duo Lux Interior on vocals and Poison Ivy on lead guitar, The Cramps developed a signature blend of rockabilly-meets-Creature Feature rock.
Or, as they described in their song “Garbageman,” they took “one half hillbilly and one half punk” to make the music that has soundtracked Halloweens for decades.
The Cramps were part of the New York City punk scene of the 1970s, along with fellow music mutants like Richard Hell & The Voidoids, The Dictators and The Ramones. Their first two albums—Song the Lord Taught Us and Psychedelic Jungle—and the Bad Music for Bad People compilation have become must-haves for Halloween fanatics and punk rockers everywhere. And now, fans will be able to bring copies home this Spooky Season.
The Cramps Announce Reissues Of Their Classic Albums

There will be limited-edition pressings of Bad Music For Bad People (with the iconic artwork by artist Stephen Blickenstaff)on glow-in-the-dark vinyl. Special editions of Psychedelic Jungle will come in fluorescent green.

Lux Interior (born Erick Lee Purkhiser) and Poison Ivy (Kristy Wallace) were the only consistent members during The Cramps' rock and roll rampage. Songs That The Lord Taught Us, the album that Classic Rock said remains “unbeatably exciting” all these years later, featured the late Bryan Greggory on guitar and Nick Knox on drums.

Rock legend Kid Congo Powers (The Gun Club, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds) would replace Gregory for Psychedelic Jungle.
Psychedelic Jungle contains The Cramps’ cover of Ronnie Cook and the Gaylads’ “Goo Goo Muck,” a song used in the now-iconic dance scene in the first season of Wednesday.
“The Cramps are perfect for Wednesday. They’re in her headspace, like Siouxsie and Joy Division,” Wednesday music supervisor Jen Malone told Varietyin 2022. “The track had to be fun, quirky and lend itself to Wednesday’s personality. For the team to come back with “Goo Goo Muck”? Done. [And] Being a part of having kids get into the Cramps – that’s awesome.”
Though they never achieved a level of mainstream popularity enjoyed by their CBGB’s contemporaries, The Cramps developed a strong cult following through the decades. In 1995, they appeared on a Halloween episode of Beverly Hills, 90210. And in 2002, they appeared on an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants—as the puppet band The Bird Brains—to perform “Underwater Sun.”
The Cramps remained positive despite commercial success always escaping their grasp (for instance, fans stripped that Wednesday scene and replaced it with a sped-up version of Lady Gaga's "Bloody Mary," which led to Gaga's involvement in season 2 of the Netflix series). After all, they had the power of rock and roll to keep their spirits high.
“Listen to old records and try to understand the feelings that were going on,” Lux told Making Musicin 1986. “Try and understand what was great about rock a roll, or the mid-sixties. Don't just copy songs or fashions, but try to understand what was happening in culture at the time. Great rock & roll is timeless, whether it's 20 years or two years old.”
The Cramps remained active, releasing eight full-length studio albums, until Lux’s death in 2009. But as he said, their music—“great rock and roll”—remains timeless.
