Welp, it’s time to empty out my Bears notebook and turn the page to Week 7.

When you play just 17 games in a season, it doesn’t take much to create a narrative for every game being a big one. With that being said, the upcoming game against the New Orleans Saints is a big one for Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson. Chicago’s football team goes from being a road underdog against a Commanders team that was playing for the NFC title last year to a 1-5 Saints squad that is in rebuild mode — and on a short week. Johnson and his staff will be tested this week. I hope everyone is up to the task. This team is starting to show that it can be a resilient group, which is a 180-degree turn from a team that folded at the first sign of adversity every week. As far as I am concerned, that turnaround is rooted in the coaching change and the quarterback buying into what the coach is selling. An opportunistic enigma? Is that a thing? Well, it is now! You’ll just have to bear with me. This defense, led by Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen, has allowed the sixth-most yards per game and is coughing up 28.2 points per game. And yet, it has the second-most takeaways (12), the second-most interceptions (8), and is tied for having the best turnover differential (+8). If you had told me at the beginning of the year that the Bears and Jaguars were tied in the turnover differential department after six weeks, I would have been worried about the direction of this team. You really can’t predict football. Is this a sign that the Bears’ DC knows what he is doing? The Dallas Cowboys offense, which was limited to 14 points against Chicago in Week 3, has averaged 32.8 points per game in the five games that weren’t against the Bears. That felt like information worth sharing with the public. I want to see more of this from D’Andre Swift in the weeks and months ahead:

If Swift reaches 1,519 scrimmage yards, it would be a career best for the Bears’ top running back. And at this pace, he’d pull it off while garnering fewer touches than he did last year (he is projected for 289 touches right now after getting 295 last year). A fun thing I noticed upon a rewatch: The Bears got the ball back with a little more than three minutes left on the clock and needed 25-30 yards to get into field goal range. It would have been easy to mismanage the clock there, but credit Ben Johnson and his staff for a wonderful bit of clock management that forced the Commanders to burn their remaining timeouts and still kick the game-winning field goal as time expired. Clock management hasn’t been a strong point of any Bears coach in recent memory, so this was refreshing. Something to know for this weekend: The Tribune’s Brad Biggs (via Twitter/X) reports that FOX is sending its crew of Kevin Kugler, Daryl “Moose” Johnston, and Allison Williams to call Bears-Saints at Soldier Field. If Kugler’s name sounds familiar, it might be because you remember him on the call of the Bears’ Week 18 win against the Packers in January. If you were wondering what’s next for that awful officiating crew from Monday Night Football, perhaps you’ll be delighted to know that they will be officiating this week’s Packers game against the Cardinals. A notable nugget from the folks at the Acme Packing Company, who point out that special teams penalties are up 43 percent on a per-game basis. It feels like the league has been flagg-y this year. Then again, it always seems that way early in the season. Hopefully, the tide turns and the games become more about the players and less about officials.
