Ishan Kishan shot up to form in the Ranji Trophy opener for Jharkhand as he missed his double century by a whisker against Tamil Nadu. This is a great time to show promising form, as Ajit Agarkar will set his eyes on players for the home Tests against South Africa.
Indian selector Ajit Agarkar would already be under immense pressure after the commanding show from Dhruv Jurel for India in the recently concluded series against the West Indies. Also, India's first-choice keeper-batter Rishabh Pant is set to make his Test return with the South Africa series.
Pant had missed out on the last series against West Indies owing to an injury he sustained back in England during their fourth Test at Manchester. However, he is fit as of now and is also set to play the opening games for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy season.
Discarded and forgotten, left-handed batter Ishan Kishan has been snubbed of an opportunity in the Indian squad across any format of the game. However, the star has been setting some strong examples and paving the way for a probable return.
The young batter scored a flurry of runs on his County Championship debut this year and now has initiated the Ranji Trophy opening round in some fashion. He dominated with a splendid 173-run knock against Tamil Nadu. Though he missed the Double century by some runs, the innings was good enough to knock on the doors of the selectors.
A historic 314-run stand for the seventh wicket ended with Kishan's dismissal
Leading Jharkhand as their skipper, he walked in at No.5 after 3 wickets had fallen with just 79 on the board. He witnessed his team collapse to 157 for 6, but Ishan Kishan anchored from one end. He patiently built on his 9th century in First-Class cricket.
The 7th wicket partnership marked a stunning display of composure from the left-hander as he added 314 runs alongside Sahil Raj, who too scored a hundred on Day 1 itself. His innings was ended on the morning of Day 2 as he was dismissed by RS Ambrish.
"We'd like him to play a bit more cricket and show some performances," said Agarkar on Ishan Kishan earlier this month
Ishan Kishan was considered as Rishabh Pant's replacement in the Playing XI for the final match in England. However, he missed the opportunity due to an unfortunate injury, and Narayan Jagadeesan replaced him. Following this, Ajit Agarkar wanted him to play and perform more.
"And Ishan - when we picked him for India [as Pant's replacement in England], he was not yet fit anyway. [N] Jagadeesan was part of the last Test match that we picked when Ishan was injured. He [Ishan] is a very good player as we know. But we'd like him to play a bit more cricket and show some performances," Agarkar had explained earlier this month.
The South Africa Test series is scheduled to begin from the 14th of November, and hence the squad is likely to be revealed later this month or likely a week into the next month.
