2 Luke Vatev Announces Commitment To Stanford For 2027

By Madeline Folsom on SwimSwam

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

It’s a trio of twos for our #2 recruit for the class of 2027, Luke Vatev. On top of being the #2 recruit in the class, Vatev is the 2nd of the “Illinois Big Three” from the Class of 2027 to announce his commitment, and he is the 2nd Stanford verbal commit this week.

“After much thought and consideration, I’m blessed and excited to announce my verbal commitment to further my academic and athletic career at Stanford University! I’m beyond grateful to God, my family, brothers, and friends for supporting me throughout this journey. I would like to thank Coaches Eric, Andy, Barber, and Schweer, along with many others for helping me become the swimmer I am today! Above all, I can’t thank Coach Dan and Coach Mike enough for this special opportunity! GO CARD”

Vatev is from Clarendon Hills, Illinois, and he was the best of three Illinois men to make the top 20 in our Way Too Early Recruit Rankings. He was the 2nd member of this group to commit with #14 Brayden Capen announcing his commitment to Tennessee earlier this week. The only recruit remaining is #6 Thomas McMillan.

He swims for Hinsdale Central High School and Hornet Swim Club, and he currently holds the top 100 free time in the class at 43.50, and the top 100 back time at 46.52. He also is the 2nd fastest 50 freestyler in the class at 19.95 as a high school sophomore, one of only three swimmers under 20 seconds.

At the Winter Juniors Championships in December, he set entirely personal best times, finishing 7th in the 50 free (19.95), 10th in the 100 free (44.07), 4th in the 200 free (1:35.83), 30th in the 500 free (4:27.04), and 3rd in the 100 back (46.87).

In March, he swam at the NCSA Spring Championships and set a personal best in the 200 back (1:42.72) to finish 1st, and personal bests in the 50 fly (21.73), 100 fly (47.49), and 200 fly (1:45.75).

He recently swam on the 400 freestyle relay at the World Junior Championships in Romania. He led off the prelims relay in 50.15, which was just off his best of 50.02. In finals, he split 49.25, which was the 2nd fastest split on the relay, only behind Mike Rice’s 48.95 to help the relay finish 2nd.

He also marks the 2nd verbal commitment to Stanford this week with women’s #12 Carolin He also verbally committing. It is unusual for Stanford commits to announce this early, as they typically have to deal with Stanford’s rigorous admissions program before they can announce. We generally see these announcements come in the late spring/early summer before the athlete’s senior year of high school. This might indicate a shift in the athletic culture at Stanford, which is one of the top academic programs in the country.

Stanford recently moved to the ACC after the Pac-12 dissolved following the 2024 season. At last year’s ACC Championships, the men’s team finished 2nd at last year’s meet.

Vatev would already be a conference scorer in the 100 back, with his time of 46.52 placing him 22nd at last year’s ACC Championships, which would have scored 3 points overall. He also is less than a tenth out of scoring position in the 200 back with 24th place going to NC State’s Stephen Conrad.

He has two more years in high school before he will join the Cardinal, and he has been on a steep improvement curve, dropping a second in the 50 free, 1.2 seconds in the 100 free, and 2.7 seconds in the 100 back last season.
