Todd Golden shares his take on Denzel Aberdeen transfer to Kentucky

Todd Golden’s glorious championship run at Florida last season is in the Gators history books with a neat bow tied on it.

In other words, it’s not going anywhere.

The same couldn’t be said for the sixth man on that national championship team, guard Denzel Aberdeen. He entered the transfer portal on April 18, just a few weeks after helping Florida cut down the nets in San Antonio, and just 3 days after that the 6-foot-5, 195-pound Orlando native had committed to SEC rival Kentucky.

Aberdeen was adamant that he didn’t want to leave Gainesville for anywhere, let alone Lexington, but after a meeting with Golden the whole tone of his attitude toward staying changed. Even after celebrating a national championship and being a meaningful part of it, averaging 7.7 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists last season, Aberdeen was as good as gone after that meeting with his now former head coach.

“There were some things in the meeting that happened and were said that made me decide that I have to leave,” Aberdeen told Kentucky Sports Radio, adding that he didn’t want to get into the whole ordeal too much more.

There’s where Golden came in. The young and now established head coach who turned 40 years old 3 months after winning that title with Aberdeen gave his take on what the issue was between player and program.

“We love Denzel,” Todd Golden told KSR. “Incredibly grateful for the contributions he made to our program. He was a huge part of our national championship team. He was a guy that came with us right when we got the job. That reality is, we would have loved to have Denzel back, and there were other things that were more important to him than what we had to offer at this point.”

Now, the head coach and the player will go their separate ways, starting now, and this season when they see each other they’ll be fierce foes. They won’t be on the team anymore, but Golden maintained that he understood why Aberdeen did what he did in transferring to Kentucky.

Golden understood what Kentucky gave Aberdeen basketball-wise and financially, and so he’s moving forward with what he has coming back in Gainesville to try to defend that national title that Aberdeen helped bring.
