Around the NFL: Jerry Jones Backs Matt Eberflus, Mangold’s Search for a Kidney, More

Through six weeks of the 2025 NFL season, the Dallas Cowboys’ defense ranks dead last in the league in yards allowed per game at 411.7 — a stunning contrast to an offense that currently leads the NFL in total yards and has Dak Prescott playing some of his best football. Despite that, Matt Eberflus has the support of Jerry Jones.

Jerry Jones Backs Matt Eberflus Despite Cowboys’ League-Worst Defense

Despite the defensive struggles, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones made it clear Tuesday that he still has full confidence in defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus.

“He’s had tremendous experience. He’s dealt with adversity with a long record of, not only with us, but his tenure in Chicago and Indianapolis, and he’s had some great successes,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan. “But he’s had his tail kicked. That’s who I want in the foxhole with me, because there’s no such thing as having all the answers.”

Jones added that he “jumped at the chance” to hire Eberflus this offseason, pointing to his familiarity with the coach from his days as Dallas’ linebackers coach from 2011 to 2017. Jones believes the team’s defensive issues can be corrected with time and attention to detail.

“These things that we’re dealing with here are not one, two major things,” Jones said. “They’re a lot of little things that you can address and get right. You can adjust the nuances of them… there’s a lot of ways to win football games, and Flus is dealing with nuances there that we can adjust and change.”

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer and executive vice president Stephen Jones have echoed that same confidence, both publicly defending Eberflus amid the growing criticism.

“I’ve been Matt. I’ve been a coordinator. And I’ve been where people are calling you out and saying you don’t know how to coach,” Schottenheimer said Monday. “Matt Eberflus is a damn good football coach. We have to perform better… We’re gonna ride this thing out. And we’ll play better. We really will.”

Former Jets Great Nick Mangold is in Need of a Kidney Transplant

Former New York Jets center Nick Mangold announced Tuesday that he is undergoing dialysis and in need of a kidney transplant after battling chronic kidney disease caused by a genetic defect diagnosed in 2006.

“I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have more time,” Mangold wrote in a statement posted to X. The 41-year-old said none of his family members are eligible donors and is seeking a type O kidney donor.

Mangold expressed gratitude for his family, friends, and the Jets community’s support, writing, “This situation has reminded me how lucky I am to have such an amazing family, friends, and community behind me.”

A first-round pick in 2006, Mangold spent his 11-year career with the Jets, earning seven Pro Bowl selections and being named first-team All-Pro twice (2009, 2010). He was a cornerstone of the Jets’ offensive line during back-to-back AFC Championship runs and remains one of the most respected players in franchise history.

Before his NFL career, Mangold was a first-team All-American at Ohio State and part of the Buckeyes’ 2002 national championship team.

Mahomes, Robinson Highlight Week 6’s Players of the Week

Week 6 of the 2025 NFL season delivered plenty of star power, as some of the league’s biggest names — and a few unexpected standouts — claimed AFC and NFC Player of the Week honors.

Patrick Mahomes took home his second AFC Offensive Player of the Week award in three weeks after another dazzling performance on Sunday night. The Chiefs quarterback led Kansas City to a 30-17 win over the Detroit Lions, completing 22 of 30 passes for 257 yards and three touchdowns while adding 32 rushing yards and another score on the ground. It was vintage Mahomes — efficient, explosive, and nearly flawless in execution.

In the NFC, Falcons running back Bijan Robinson turned in a career night on Monday, exploding for 238 total yards in Atlanta’s 24-14 win over the Buffalo Bills. Robinson’s 81-yard touchdown run — the longest of his young career — highlighted a night in which he rushed for 170 yards and added 68 through the air, breaking a franchise record for total scrimmage yards in a single game.

On defense, Broncos edge rusher Jonathon Cooper wreaked havoc overseas in London, helping Denver grind out a 13-11 win over the New York Jets. Cooper finished with five tackles, two sacks, and a tackle for loss, anchoring a defensive effort that held the Jets to just 82 yards of total offense.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Jamel Dean earned NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors after a game-changing performance in the Bucs’ 30-19 win over the San Francisco 49ers. Dean filled up the stat sheet with four tackles, a sack, an interception, and a forced fumble — a complete, dominant display that fueled Tampa Bay’s upset victory.

In the special teams department, Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker and Panthers rookie Ryan Fitzgerald shared the spotlight with clutch, perfect performances. Dicker scored 17 total points in Los Angeles’ 29-27 win over the Miami Dolphins, going 5-for-5 on field goals — including the game-winning 33-yarder with five seconds left — and adding two extra points.

    — Minnesota Vikings (@Vikings) October 15, 2025 Rams WR Puka Nacua will not practice today and probably won’t play on Sunday. The Rams have a bye week coming up in Week 8, and taking advantage of the extra rest seems like the most reasonable option for Nacua’s ankle injury. Fun fact: For the first time in 19 years, a pair of left-handed quarterbacks will square off in an NFL game when Tua Tagovailoa and Dillon Gabriel meet for the first time. It last happened on September 17, 2006. Buccaneers at Falcons. Chris Simms vs. Mike Vick. (PFT) Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb will practice for the first time since he injured his ankle in Week 3 against the Bears on Wednesday. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said that WR KaVontae Turpin and RG Tyler Booker will also participate in practice on Wednesday.
