Urban Meyer has been a coach at some of the biggest jobs in college football in Florida and Ohio State, and he knows how big schools like that deal with hiring a coach.
There have already been multiple schools this season that have decided to fire their coach. However, the big domino to fall was at Penn State, when the school decided on Sunday to fire longtime head coach James Franklin.
The in-season move was a shock, but Meyer said on The Triple Option podcast this week that he thinks Penn State already knows who its next coach will be.
“When you fire a coach whose record was 104-45, was in the Rose Bowl, Peach Bowl, and (was) a score away from playing a national championship, and 16 days ago could be possibly the No. 1 team in the country,” Meyer stated, “I don’t think you make that move with a $75 million expense coming unless you know who you’re going to hire.”
Penn State is the marquee open job on the market. Other schools — Virginia Tech, UCLA, and Arkansas — have all made in-season coaching changes as well, but they’ll now take a backseat to Penn State in the cycle.
The approach for those schools is significantly different than what Penn State is going through.
“When you fire a guy at Virginia Tech, Arkansas, UCLA to a degree, they hire a search firm,” Meyer said. “The search firm goes out and, behind the scenes, talks to some candidates. Then, the search firm puts together a list and they give it back to the athletic directors, president, search committee, whatever it is. The reason they do that is because those kind of schools, you have to go out and search who’s interested. Those aren’t top-10, top-5 jobs. Penn State’s a whole different animal.”
Nebraska coach Matt Rhule has been the most talked-about person for the Penn State job, as he played college football there and is best friends with athletic director Pat Kraft from when the two worked together at Temple.
While Meyer didn’t say he knows who the next coach is, he believes the school knows.
