Napier attempted to lure Charlie Weis Jr. away from Ole Miss, but when that approach was rebuked, Napier never made another “serious run” at another candidate.
Napier confirmed earlier this season he was still the man calling plays for the offense.
According to the USA Today salary database, Napier’s buyout would be just over $20 million — less than half of what Penn State just committed to pay to fire James Franklin. Napier would be owed 50% of his buyout within 30 days of the school’s decision to terminate him, and then equal installments of 12.5% over the next 3 years, according to Hayes.
The report also mentions that, in the event Florida decided to fire Napier, Stricklin hopes Napier would coach out the rest of the season while Florida looked for his replacement.
Napier is in his fourth year with the program. He is just 21-23 so far. Among coaches who lasted at least 4 years at the school, his record currently ranks as the fourth-worst by winning percentage.
