“There was a lot of talk around our program and a lot of talk around Mark (being in the running for other jobs)… our fans wanted us to make sure we didn’t lose a guy that had been so beneficial to our program, and so we walked through that,” Barnhart told the outlet. “We were thankful to be able to secure him as our football coach and keep him around and make sure that he was a Wildcat. And I’m still proud of that.”
The aforementioned extension, signed on Nov. 11, 2022, raised Stoops’ salary to $9 million. That paycheck made him one of the 10 highest-paid college football coaches in the country at the time and gave him a better salary than Wildcat basketball coach John Calipari. Kentucky lost to Vanderbilt — which had dropped 26 straight SEC games heading into the contest — 1 day after the extension.
The Wildcats are 4-17 in SEC play since Stoops’ extension. According to Hale, if Barnhart had not given Stoops that extension, his buyout today would be “roughly $10 million less” than it is today.
