For Halloween, Will Wade should put on a plaid sportcoat and a Norman Sloan mask.

The new N.C. State basketball coach came to Raleigh with mouth running, mostly about Carolina. What does Wade know about this rivalry?

Some Wolfpack fans need to educate Wade by telling him he may hate the Tar Heels but prior coaches have demonstrated mutual respect all the way back to Jim Valvano and beyond to Sloan, who tangled with Dean Smith during State’s short run to national prominence. Wade is already hitting Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels for no reason.

Darrion Williams, their new star guard has come out strong in support of two former Tar Heels he knows. Of Ven-Allen Lubin, who transferred from UNC after one season, Williams claimed Carolina didn’t know how to use him. The other, Kerwin Walton, whom Williams played with at Texas Tech, was a good shooter at UNC but couldn’t do much more.

We don’t know if Hubert Davis wanted Lubin to come back because the Tar Heels were small and the 6-7 Lubin was their best and biggest man and leading rebounder (5.5 per game). He got better as the season went on.

Walton was UNC’s best outside shooter for a poor shooting team in Roy Williams’ last season. In Hubert’s first, Walton’s 3-point percentage dropped to fifth best while playing fewer minutes, so he transferred to Texas Tech, where he was a starter alongside Williams but a specialty offensive player.

Anyway, Williams said at the ACC basketball media day, where he was named preseason Player of the Year, “we hate UNC.” Carolina freshman Caleb Wilson predicted the Heels would beat State in their one regular-season game in Raleigh. So kids will be kids.

The rivalry was much more respectful from the head coaches, except when Ol’ Roy said he wanted to beat the Wolfpack more than any other opponent and practiced what he preached with a career 38-5 record against State (five of the wins coming at Kansas).

Even the flamboyant Jimmy V treated UNC with respect in public (he made fun of just about every school in private). After the Tar Heels beat State in the last game at Carmichael Auditorium in early 1986, Valvano dragged the smiling Smith back onto the court to watch him shoot a layup and said, “I wanted to make the last basket in Blue Heaven.”

Even during the subsequent eras of five coaches after Valvano, there was far more sportsmanship between the schools. In the eras of Everett Case and especially Sloan, the vitriol was palpable as Frank McGuire and then Smith had fierce rivalries with State while the Wolfpack with David Thompson beat the Heels nine straight in one stretch before Sloan went back to coach at Florida because he could no longer beat Carolina.

Sloan wore wild sports jackets during the ‘70s and was just as wild on the bench. We’ll see how Wade dresses and acts in his first season in Raleigh.
