Sons of 2 Country Music Icons Might Have a Dream Collaboration in the Works

It's not always easy for the children of legendary musicians to carve out their own paths in the industry, but it's safe to say that Willie Nelson's son, Lukas Nelson, has done just that.

Not only did Lukas write his very first song when he was only 11 years old, but that tune went on to be included on his dad's album It Will Always Be. Following that auspicious debut, he went on to play with his father’s Family Band; he's also released eight albums with Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real and played backup for Neil Young from 2014 to 2019.

In June of this year, Nelson released his very first album under his own name, titled American Romance. In a new interview with Cleveland.com, the country star opened up about working on the record with producer Shooter Jennings, his longtime pal and the son of the late Waylon Jennings, one of Willie Nelson’s best friends and collaborators.

As Nelson explained, it made perfect sense for the musicians to join forces in the studio.

"We grew up together," Nelson said, adding, "Shooter is just an amazing human being, an amazing friend. Shooter is also a brilliant producer; he’s produced some of my favorite works, so he’s really knowledgeable, especially with the type of music I love and I’m into."

"When he reached out and said he wanted to be part of this — in a letter he wrote me — it all seemed like it couldn't have been more perfect," Nelson continued. "I was really excited when he reached out, and, man, I feel like he did a great job of capturing exactly what we needed to."

When asked about the possibility of the pair performing on an album together the way their fathers did, Nelson pointed out that his current album was "kind of the way" for them to collaborate.

"Shooter is very much a producer; he loves producing his friends’ music, and people he believes in," Nelson said.

"I think that’s where he feels the most at home, in his production," he continued. "So this is how Lukas and Shooter collaborate. We have sung together; we might do an album together one time where we sing together. But I really think he loves his role as a producer most, and he’s damn good at it."

Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings first met at a bar in Phoenix, Arizona

When the elder Nelson and Jennings first made each other's acquaintance, both were still in the beginning phases of their careers.

“I first saw him at a place in, I think it was Phoenix, when he was working at a bar there,” Nelson once recalled, per American Songwriter. “And I watched his show, and he played good guitar, and he sang good. And I met him after the show and we were talking, and he said, ‘What do you think I oughta do? Do you think I oughta go to Nashville?’”

Nelson continued, “I said, ‘How much money you making?’ He said, ‘I think $400 a week.’ I said, ‘Stay where you are.’ Of course, he didn’t listen to me, he went on to Nashville and did great.”

Of course, as fans know, Nelson and Jennings went on to tour together and collaborate in the decades to follow, with Nelson co-writing such Jennings hits as “Good Hearted Woman” and “Pretend I Never Happened."

In 1978, the duo released their debut collaborative album, Waylon & Willie, which featured the classic hit “Mammas, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys.”
