It’s only preseason, but Matas Buzelis looks like a man on a mission.
The second year forward has taken the floor with something to prove over the team’s first four exhibition games. He started things off by dropping 19 points in fewer than 25 minutes of action in two of his first three preseason games. Fast forward to Monday night’s meeting in Denver, and Buzelis was on pace to do it again.
Buzelis was all over the court in the first half. He scored the team’s first points of the night, coming off a Nikola Vucevic screen near the top of the key and scoring right through Nikola Jokic. Up next was another aggressive take to the rim and an extended finish over the three-time MVP. Moments before that, he cut into open space as Ayo Dosunmu sliced his way into the paint. The guard quickly sent the ball Buzelis’ way, leading to an explosive reverse layup.
Overall, Buzelis walked into the halftime break with an effortless 14 points (6-11 FG), 4 blocks, and 3 rebounds. He capped off the strong opening half with an alley-oop slam off the Josh Giddey dime.

However, Buzelis’ performance isn’t one of those things. This game serves as a good reminder of the bigger picture for the 2025-26 season. If he can take the next step and begin to look like the star this franchise needs, they will be in an exponentially better place moving forward.
