Diamond-Selling 90s Music Legend Mourns the Loss of Genius Neo-Soul Pioneer in Emotional Tribute 

Lauryn Hill is joining the music world in mourning the major loss of R&B singer and Neo-Soul pioneer D'Angelo.

The history-making and diamond-selling artist took to Instagram on Tuesday, Oct. 14 to share her sentiments regarding the death of the "Brown Sugar" singer, praising the soulful musician as "a beacon of light."

    As Parade reported, D'Angelo—born Michael Eugene Archer—died on Oct. 14 at the age of 51, after a private battle with pancreatic cancer.

    "People need reflection," Hill, 50, opened the caption of her post. "I regret not having more time with you. Your undeniable beauty and talent were not of this world, and a presence not of this world needs protection in a world that covets light and the anointing of God. You sir, moved us, stirred us, inspired and even intimidated others to action with your genius."

    The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill artist and Voodoo crooner weren't just friends, but also collaborators, releasing the duet love ballad "Nothing Even Matters" in 1998 as part of the former's debut solo, record-breaking album.

    On social media, Hill's poignant tribute continued, as the "Doo Wop" rapper spoke to the impact of a unique talent of his magnitude: "Thank you for being a beacon of light to a generation and beyond who had no remembrance of the legacy that preceded us. Thank you for charting the course and for making space during a time when no similar space really existed. You imaged [sic] a unity of strength and sensitivity in Black manhood to a generation that only saw itself as having to be one or the other."

    The former Fugees star's beautiful words were accompanied by a collection of photos of the late, iconic music star, as well as one of the two together.

    "It is my earnest prayer that you are in peace, far away from selfishness, fear and/or controlling interests. Far from possessiveness, far from greed, far from manipulation, far from exploitation, far from intentionally designed chaos and that you Brother are in peace, in bliss and in eternal light and fulfillment with our Father in heaven," she added, before wrapping up with, "I Love you and I miss you. May God grant peace and shelter to your family, true friends and genuine appreciators, Brother, King."

    Fans in the comments section expressed heartfelt condolences, as well as their own fond memories of the singer's contribution to music.

    Announcing the death of the hitmaker, his loved ones shared a moving perspective. “We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind,” a representative for the D’Angelo Estate noted in a statement, per People. “We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time, but invite you all join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.”

    D'Angelo is widely regarded as the father of the Neo-Soul genre movement. During his career, he earned four Grammy awards, bringing the world such hits as "Untitled (How Does It Feel)," "Lady," "Cruisin'," "Left & Right," "Send It On," "I Found My Smile Again," and more.
