Among D'Angelo's industry connections was a certain hitmaker who's still going strong into his 70s.
Following the R&B sensation's untimely death on Tuesday, Oct. 14, Nile Rodgers, 73, took to social media to pay tribute to D'Angelo and recount a monumental first meeting that Rodgers still remembers "as it it were yesterday."
"My friend Gary Harris brought this musician named D'Angelo over to my NYC apt. He was trying to figure out what to do with the music he'd brought with him," Rodgers wrote in the caption of his Tuesday post on Instagram. "I listened to every cut…not just out of respect but because it was smoking. At the end of the encounter he asked me, 'What should I do with it?'"
Rodgers continued, "I remember this as if it were yesterday. I said, 'Put it out. It's perfect!' Being the #artist he is, I guess he had to explore some ways to make it better. About a year later I heard one of those songs on the radio. It was #genius and it was exactly what he had played for me. I know…I still have the original cassette."
Accompanying Rodgers' anecdote in the post is a photo of D'Angelo performing, with a header that reads, "RIP my brother." A snippet of the late singer's beloved song "Brown Sugar" plays over the image.
