A website created Tuesday ties Senate Leader Phil Berger’s son Kevin Berger to a candidacy for Congress — but the potential candidate is mum on whether he has plans to run.

The domain “kevinbergerforcongress.com” was created Tuesday, drawing online attention from the North Carolina political world as Berger and the General Assembly prepare for a mid-decade redistricting push. The identity of the person who registered the site is not available to the public.

The domain change was first flagged by Carolina Forward, a left-leaning group, on social media; a cross-check of the domain name on ICANN, a nonprofit tool that tracks online registration data, confirms that it was created Tuesday.

Kevin Berger serves as a Rockingham County commissioner. His father, Phil, has been the N.C. Senate President Pro Tem since 2011. Kevin’s brother, Phil Jr., serves on the N.C. Supreme Court. Phil Jr. ran for Congress in 2014, losing a primary to former U.S. Rep. Mark Walker.

NC Newsline contacted Kevin Berger Tuesday to ask if he had registered the domain and whether he was planning to run for Congress. Berger said he was unaware of the domain name registration, but did not provide a direct answer about a potential candidacy.

“I am not familiar with what you are talking about,” Berger said by text message. “I would encourage you to reach out to whomever contacted you to find out about the domain name.”

When asked again whether he would run for Congress, he responded, “I support Virginia Foxx.”

Foxx, 82, currently represents the county in Washington. But with another round of redistricting on the horizon, Rockingham County could fall within the bounds of a new or significantly altered district.

Asked whether his answer would change if he found himself residing in a new district with an open seat, Berger responded, “I have no reason to believe that would occur.”

Berger, who chairs the county board, won one of three open seats on the board in November, earning 24.2% of the vote.

He was one of several defendants in a defamation lawsuit tied to the November election and the ongoing efforts to build a casino in the county in 2023. That lawsuit was dismissed by a judge in May.
