Safe2Tell reports spike, approach monthly record with students “on edge” after Evergreen shooting

Reports made to Colorado’s anonymous Safe2Tell program spiked last month with students on high alert following a shooting at Evergreen High School, bringing in the second-highest monthly total in the program’s 21-year history.

Elevated reporting often follows significant school safety incidents, and September’s uptick showed “an increased statewide vigilance” in the days after a 16-year-old student opened fire and wounded two fellow classmates before turning the gun on himself, said Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, whose office collects the monthly reports.

“Following the heartbreaking events at Evergreen High School, students and community members across Colorado are understandably on edge,” Weiser said in a statement. “Safe2Tell provides an opportunity to take action because every report represents someone choosing to protect their community and look out for one another. That’s exactly the kind of vigilance we need to keep schools safe.”

The attack unfolded in nine minutes and sent hundreds of confused and terrified students barricading themselves in classrooms or fleeing the school seeking safety in strangers’ homes nearby.

In September, 3,846 reports were made, about 19% of which were concerns related to school safety, according to the Colorado Attorney General’s Office. Bullying concerns were included in 13.4% of the reports, and mental health was cited in 12.8% of the reports, the attorney general’s office said.

In a recent case, a person reported that a student was blackmailing another and threatening to involve law enforcement unless their demands were met. Local teams intervened, contacted both students and their parents, and provided counseling to the student who was targeted, the AG’s office said.

Another person said they saw alcohol in a student’s car and was concerned that the student might be drinking and driving. School officials investigated, confirmed alcohol was present, contacted the student’s parents and disciplined the student.

Duplicate reports led all of the categories — making up nearly 23% of reports — which the AG’s office called a reflection of a “strong culture of care where multiple people speak up about the same concern.”

False reports remained historically low at just 1.1%.

The highest number of reports made to Safe2Tell, which accepts reports via app, text or call, were made in September 2024 when viral social media posts were circulating about a potential school attack, the office said. That month, 4,729 reports were made, marking a 74% increase compared to the same month in 2023.

To make a report, individuals can call 1-877-542-7233 from anywhere, at any time. Reports also can be made at Safe2Tell.org, by texting S2TCO to 738477, or through the Safe2Tell mobile app.
