It was announced that Grammy-winning R&B artist Michael Eugene Archer, better known by his stage name D'Angelo, passed away after a long battle with pancreatic cancer on Tuesday morning.

His 2000 follow-up, Voodoo, featured the iconic hit "Untitled (How Does It Feel)," which earned him widespread critical acclaim and a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. After a 14-year hiatus marked by personal and professional struggles, D'Angelo made a powerful comeback with Black Messiah in 2014.

D'Angelo left behind three children, including his son Michael Archer II, a singer who uses the name Swayvo Twain. Twain's mother and the late singer's longtime partner, Angie Stone, passed away suddenly earlier this year in a car crash. Though Stone and D'Angelo broke up in 1999, their relationship was very public and she was rumored to be the muse behind Brown Sugar.

His family released a statement that was shared with many publications, calling him "a shining star of our family and has dimmed his light for us in this life," and added that they are "eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind."

He was 51 years old when he passed.
