TEMPE — Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt received a full dose of first-team reps in Tuesday’s practice, testing his mobility on an injured foot more than he had last week.
“I think we’re gonna have a conversation here today, tomorrow morning in terms of what (the plan) looks like,” ASU coach Kenny Dillingham said of his quarterback’s availability ahead of a massive game against Big 12 frontrunner Texas Tech.
“I thought he moved around pretty good today. … Last week, he never left the pocket, so we didn’t really know. Today, he moved around in the pocket which was a positive. He looked more like himself.”

Because Leavitt played through the injury in two games, according to Dillingham, before he was listed as probable, doubtful and out on three consecutive Big 12 availability reports last week, there was public confusion as to how the injury developed.
Dillingham on Monday made note of Leavitt’s limited workload in practice last week and how that was an indicator the situation wasn’t perfect.
The coach also said rumors — like the one claiming Leavitt injured his foot playing pickup basketball — may have been a result of ASU’s transparency on the matter, which showed on Friday when Leavitt was ruled out around 1 p.m. MST, six hours ahead of an availability report update.
“This is just purely being honest,” Dillingham said. “Sometimes when you’re honest, people create fake things because sometimes honesty is just rare. So I think the fact that we’re being honest with the situation is making people uncomfortable. The reality is he’s day-to-day.”
If Leavitt has to miss another game, Jeff Sims would be lined up to make his second straight start. Sims was 18 of 38 for 124 passing yards with 52 rushing yards on 21 carries at Utah.
Meanwhile, Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton is also considered day-to-day, head coach Joey McGuire told reporters on Monday.
Catch ASU-Texas Tech at 1 p.m. MST on Saturday on 98.7 and the Arizona Sports app. It will be televised on FOX.
